Why Cyprus International University

Cyprus International University (CIU) is a prestigious private university in North Nicosia, Northern Cyprus, and one of the region’s leading and most internationally recognised institutions. Founded in 1997, it has grown into a comprehensive university of 22,000+ students from around 110 countries (about 70% international), with 12 faculties and roughly 196 programs taught largely in English. Ranked among the top 800 universities worldwide by Times Higher Education and one of the world’s most sustainable campuses, CIU pairs global-standard, accredited programs with affordable tuition and a vibrant, multicultural campus, true to its motto, “Open for open minds.”

History & milestones

CIU was established in 1997 to meet growing demand for English-medium higher education in Cyprus and the wider region. It began with just 80 students and 15 programs, then expanded rapidly with a global vision from the outset. Within 25 years its student body surged past 22,000 and its programs grew to around 196 across associate, undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. Milestones include founding faculties such as Medicine, Engineering and Law, building a vast modern campus, joining international university associations, hosting global conferences and launching research centres, and earning notable international sustainability recognition. Backed by the Levent Group (a Cypriot conglomerate), CIU has matured into a modern, globally connected university producing graduates who succeed worldwide.

Nicosia & the campus

CIU sits in the Haspolat area of North Nicosia, about 5 km from the city centre and 14 km from Ercan International Airport (with connections via Turkey to the world). It occupies a single, sprawling ~1 million m² campus that functions like a small university town, all 12 faculties, research centres, residences and amenities in one well-planned, green setting. Nicosia offers historic walled-city charm, museums and cafés, while the Mediterranean coast is close by, Kyrenia ~30 km and Famagusta’s beaches ~50 km away, perfect for weekends. Northern Cyprus is safe, warm and welcoming, and a free shuttle links campus to the city.

Vision & mission

CIU’s vision is to offer a transformative educational experience that produces educated, engaged and ethical leaders ready to drive positive change. Its mission is student-centred, helping students gain the knowledge, practical skills and progressive values for successful careers and sustainable living, through cross-disciplinary learning, advanced technology and independent thinking. Sustainability and community service run through its identity, and its motto “Open for open minds” captures core values of communication, participation, fairness, diversity and sustainability.

Rankings & recognition

CIU is one of the best-ranked universities in Northern Cyprus. It places in the 601-800 band of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025, among the world’s leading ~3% of institutions, and performs strongly by subject: 301-400 globally for Business & Economics, top 500 in Social Sciences, and 601-800 in Engineering. It is a sustainability standout, ranked 64th in the world and 1st in Cyprus by the UI GreenMetric 2024, and appears in Webometrics (~2,235 globally, 11th in Cyprus). These results confirm CIU meets global standards in teaching, research and international outlook.
