Why Near East University
Near East University (NEU) is a leading private university in Nicosia, the capital of Northern Cyprus, and the largest higher-education institution in the region. Founded in 1988, it has grown into an internationally renowned university with 25,000+ students from 100+ countries, around 20 faculties, some 1,200 academics and a world-class campus. NEU is the only university in North Cyprus with faculties of Medicine and Dentistry and its own fully equipped, JCI-accredited teaching hospital, and with a strong reputation, globally recognised degrees and affordable tuition, it’s the region’s flagship and a top choice for students from across Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
History & milestones
NEU was established in 1988 by Dr. Suat Günsel in North Nicosia, starting with just two faculties and expanding rapidly to around 20 faculties and many schools and institutes by the 2000s. Landmark milestones include launching the Faculty of Medicine in 2008, the first in Northern Cyprus, and opening the NEU Hospital in 2009, a modern teaching and regional healthcare centre. It built 30+ research centres and invested in cutting-edge infrastructure, including a supercomputer (once among the world’s top 15 by computational power) and the Grand Library, one of the largest in the Eastern Mediterranean. It pioneered firsts such as the country’s first dentistry program and the region’s first solar-powered car, transforming from a small local college into an internationally recognised university in just a few decades.
Nicosia, the island advantage
NEU’s vast ~98-hectare main campus sits a few kilometres from central Nicosia (Lefkoşa), in a safe, quiet area along Near East Boulevard. Nicosia is a historic Mediterranean capital with a warm, sunny climate, a walled old town, cafés and festivals, and a large, welcoming international student community. English is widely spoken on campus and around the city, the cost of living is affordable, and frequent flights and ferries connect the island to Turkey and the wider region, offering students a focused, secure campus environment alongside a lively, student-friendly city at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa.
Vision & mission
NEU aspires to be an internationally leading university that pushes the boundaries of knowledge in science, art and sports, cultivating a liberal, innovative academic environment that leads social development and shapes the future with universal values. Its mission is to produce high-quality scholarship and well-rounded graduates who benefit society, advancing science and technology to raise standards for its country and humanity, contributing creative solutions to real-world problems faced by government, industry and communities, and instilling critical thinking, lifelong learning, global awareness and equality and inclusivity (all events and opportunities accessible regardless of ethnicity, religion, disability or gender).
Rankings & recognition
NEU is the #1 university in Northern Cyprus and among the best in the region. Times Higher Education 2025 places it in the 601-800 band worldwide (top 5 in Turkey overall), U.S. News Best Global Universities 2025-26 ranks it #681 worldwide (6th in Turkey, 1st in Cyprus), and the THE Young University Rankings 2024 #139 globally (top young universities under 50). It excels by subject, top 250 worldwide for Computer Science, top 300 for Engineering and Education, and was ranked 6th in the world for Quality Education (SDG4) and 8th for Sustainable Cities in the THE Impact Rankings. Remarkable performance for a university founded in 1988.
Academics & language of instruction
NEU offers an enormous range, about 196 undergraduate and 240+ graduate programs (120+ master’s, 60+ PhD) plus 2-year associate degrees across some 20 faculties, vocational schools and a graduate institute. The great majority are taught in English (Medicine, Engineering, Computer Science, International Business, ELT and more), with Turkish options and a Preparatory School for English (or Turkish) language support. Bachelor’s degrees run 4 years (Medicine 6, Dentistry 5), with many master’s offering thesis/non-thesis tracks. The curriculum follows the Bologna/ECTS framework and is anchored by extensive research infrastructure, the supercomputer, 30+ research centres, and clinical facilities, for genuinely hands-on, research-active study.

- Faculty of Medicine, a 6-year MD (English), the first in North Cyprus, with clinical training at the on-campus NEU Hospital; WDOMS-listed for international licensing.
- Faculty of Dentistry, a 5-year BDS with on-site, JCI-accredited dental clinics; the region’s only dentistry faculty.
- Faculty of Pharmacy, a 5-year program, the first in North Cyprus and ACPE-accredited (a US standard), with pharmaceutical labs; plus Veterinary Medicine with its own animal hospital.
- Faculty of Engineering, Computer, Electrical-Electronics, Civil, Mechanical, Software and Mechatronics Engineering (top-300 worldwide), using the supercomputer and high-tech labs (solar-car and CERN involvement).

Tuition & scholarships
NEU’s tuition is affordable and quoted in euros, fixed for the duration of study; the figures below are approximate annual guidance, exact current fees appear in the tuition table above:
- Associate (2-year) programs: roughly €2,655-2,800 / year
- Bachelor’s (most fields): about €2,915-3,200 / year

NEU is very generous with scholarships, academic merit awards of 50% or 100%, sports scholarships, country-specific and sibling discounts, and a competitive NEU Full Scholarship covering tuition, accommodation and a stipend. Government Türkiye Scholarships are accepted, fees can be paid in instalments, and tuition is locked at the first-year rate. With North Cyprus’s low cost of living, NEU offers exceptional value.
Graduate studies
NEU’s Institute of Graduate Studies runs 120+ master’s and 60+ doctoral programs, among the largest graduate offerings in the region. Master’s options (many thesis or non-thesis) include the popular MBA (Finance, Marketing, HR), engineering M.Sc. degrees (Electrical-Electronics, Computer, Energy Systems, Software, Information Systems), Master of Education, Master of Public Health, and MA programs in International Relations, Psychology and the arts. PhD programs span engineering, Molecular Biology & Genetics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Clinical/Medical specialties, Educational Sciences, Economics, Architecture and more. Graduate students access the supercomputer, hospital and 30+ research centres, often publish in indexed journals before graduating, join international collaborations (including CERN), and can secure teaching/research assistantships with stipends or fee remission.
Campus & facilities
NEU’s campus is among the most extensive and best-equipped in the region. The NEU University Hospital (55,000 m², JCI-accredited), dental and veterinary hospitals anchor a full clinical-training cluster, while the Grand Library, open 24/7, with 1M+ print volumes and ~115M electronic resources, is one of the Eastern Mediterranean’s largest. Add a supercomputer, 30+ research centres and advanced labs, the Atatürk Culture & Congress Centre (700-seat hall), unique museums (a 140-vehicle classic-car museum, art and communications museums), an Olympic-size pool and fitness centre, on-campus banks, shops and a post office, and free shuttles to the city, a true self-contained academic city. On-campus dormitories (13 buildings, ~5,000 beds, separated by gender, 24/7 security) house a large share of students.
Student services & campus life
NEU surrounds its huge international community with comprehensive support. On-campus dormitories (singles to studios and apartments) plus housing referrals make settling easy, and a 24/7 Grand Library, on-campus health services (next to the full hospital), free counseling and a disability-inclusive campus look after study and well-being. A Career Center offers CV/interview workshops, career fairs and internship placement, while an active International Student Office handles residence permits, document translation, airport pickup, orientation and city tours for students from 100+ countries. With dozens of clubs (cultural, academic, sports), an annual Spring Festival, NEU’s own TV and radio stations, successful sports teams (notably women’s basketball), and a Student Satisfaction Center, campus life is vibrant, safe and genuinely multicultural, a “mini United Nations.”
Accreditations & recognition
NEU holds dual national recognition from Turkey’s YÖK and North Cyprus’s YÖDAK, so its degrees are valid in both systems and recognised across many countries (Morocco, Pakistan and more). It is a member of the European University Association (EUA), the International Association of Universities (IAU/UNESCO) and the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World (FUIW), part of 100+ international bodies. Its Pharmacy faculty is ACPE-accredited (US), its Medicine faculty is WDOMS-listed (WHO/WFME) for international licensing, and its hospital and dental clinics hold JCI accreditation (its dental clinic among the first private clinics worldwide to earn it). It also runs Erasmus+ exchange, so an NEU degree is genuinely recognised worldwide.
Special highlights & why choose
NEU’s defining strength is being the region’s flagship, comprehensive, top-ranked and uniquely complete in the health sciences. As the only North Cyprus university with Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine, all backed by its own JCI-accredited hospital and clinics (and a WDOMS-listed, ACPE-accredited lineage), it’s a premier destination for international health students. Its engineering and technology are research powerhouses, a supercomputer, CERN involvement, a record-setting solar car and top-300 global standing, and its business programs blend a 100-nationality classroom with entrepreneurship support. Add a 24/7 million-volume library, 30+ research centres, exceptional scholarships (up to full rides with accommodation), #1-in-Cyprus and global top-700 rankings, English-medium breadth, and an affordable, safe, sunny Mediterranean setting, and Near East University is the most comprehensive, internationally recognised and resource-rich choice in Northern Cyprus.

Campus
What students say
What I like most is the balance: Economics classes are taken seriously, but festivals, sports and clubs keep university life fun.
NEU Main Campus has everything in one place — classes, food, sports, quiet corners to study. I spend the whole day there without needing to leave.
The library and study spaces stay open late, which saved me during exam weeks. Everything on campus feels modern and well kept.
