Why Istanbul Aydin University
Istanbul Aydın University (IAU) is one of Turkey’s leading and largest private universities, known for a modern approach to education and a vibrant campus life. Established in 2007 under the Anatolia Education and Culture Foundation (AKEV), it has grown into a comprehensive institution of 43,000+ students, including 6,500+ internationals from across the world, taught by 3,000+ academic staff across 12 faculties, and earned recognition as “Turkey’s Most Preferred Foundation University.” With strong academic programs, state-of-the-art facilities, an on-campus teaching hospital, EUR-ACE engineering and a genuinely global outlook, IAU offers a QS-ranked education in the heart of Istanbul, under its motto “Towards a Bright Future.”
History & milestones
IAU was formally established in May 2007 under AKEV through a special law, building on the Anadolu BİL Vocational School of Higher Education founded in 2003, a head start that meant it already had higher-education experience when it opened as a university. From a handful of programs it grew rapidly, adding faculties, 36 research centers and graduate institutes to keep pace with modern fields and industry needs. Within about two decades it became one of Turkey’s largest universities, with 86,000+ alumni and a reputation for innovation, technology and industry engagement. From the outset it adopted the slogan “Towards a Bright Future,” signalling a forward-looking commitment to student success.
Istanbul, two campuses
IAU is based in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest metropolis, spanning two continents, and operates two main campuses:
- Halit Aydın Campus (Florya), the main campus on the European side in the Florya/Sefaköy area, about 10 minutes from the former Atatürk Airport. It houses most faculties (engineering, architecture, business, law, medicine, communications and more), advanced labs including the Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar Technology Center (one of Turkey’s leading tech labs), and the Faculty of Medicine’s on-campus training hospital, a lively campus where, students say, there’s “an activity every hour of the day.”
- Bahçelievler Campus, about 6 km away, home to the School of Foreign Languages / English Preparatory Program (where ~2,500 students study English, Spanish or Russian each year) and the Dentistry Practice & Research Center, a modern dental hospital where students train and the public receives care.
A free shuttle links the two, and the central Istanbul location gives students access to internships, culture and the energy of a city bridging East and West.
Vision & mission
IAU’s vision is to be a globally respected higher-education institution that drives innovation and produces graduates who benefit humanity, cultivating sustainable innovation and the competencies needed in a rapidly changing world. Its mission centres on quality education that turns knowledge into real-world solutions, encouraging entrepreneurship, advancing research even at the undergraduate level, and preparing students for global competition and multicultural environments. Its core values include transparency and equity, innovative leadership, social responsibility, respect for diversity and a deeply student-focused approach, shaping well-rounded, globally minded graduates ready to thrive internationally.
Rankings & recognition
For a young university, IAU has built a notable ranking profile. The QS World University Rankings place it in the 1201-1400 band (around 15th in Turkey), Times Higher Education 2025 in the 1501+ band (about 34th nationally), and the Round University Ranking 2025 at #767 globally (19th in Turkey). It is recognised for sustainability too, ranked #379 worldwide (37th in Turkey) in the UI GreenMetric, and features in the QS Emerging Europe & Central Asia region’s top 300. THE highlights its strong International Outlook, and IAU has openly stated its ambition to climb toward Turkey’s top 5 and the world’s top 500. These standings show a university making its mark alongside much older Turkish institutions.
Academics & language of instruction
IAU offers an exceptional breadth of programs, around 70 bachelor’s, 100+ associate, 74 master’s and 32 doctoral programs across 12 faculties, 2 vocational schools, a School of Foreign Languages and 3 graduate institutes. Instruction is in Turkish and English: dozens of English-medium programs span engineering, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, business, IR, English literature and more, with an English Preparatory Program (Pearson Assured) for those who need it and Turkish-language support for others. The curriculum follows the ECTS system with EU labels, and IAU’s exceptional industry ties, 10,000+ “solution partners”, bring internships, projects and a ~84% graduate employment rate into nearly every program.

The university offers cash-payment discounts (typically 10% for undergraduates paying upfront, ~5% for Medicine/Dentistry/Pharmacy), sibling discounts, merit and international scholarships, and graduate assistantships, plus acceptance of government Türkiye Scholarships. Many programs list both a standard and a discounted fee, and Istanbul’s relatively moderate cost of living keeps the overall budget manageable.
Graduate studies
Graduate education is a strong focus, coordinated through IAU’s Institute of Graduate Studies, with 74 master’s and 32 doctoral programs and both thesis (research) and non-thesis (professional) tracks. Popular master’s options include an English MBA, Project Management, International Relations, AI & Data Science, Energy Technologies, and engineering and education programs, many scheduled flexibly for working students, with some hybrid/online components. PhD programs span engineering, business, the social sciences, education and health. A defining strength is the link to research and industry: graduate students work in the university’s 36 research centers and Technopark/incubation ecosystem (blockchain, VR, energy, disaster management, the Africa Research Center), join EU-funded and Horizon Europe projects, publish, attend international conferences, and access research exchanges through IAU’s 670+ partner universities, with assistantships and teaching opportunities available.
Campus & facilities
IAU is exceptionally well-resourced. The Florya campus integrates an on-campus teaching hospital, the Aziz Sancar Technology Center, 36 research centers and high-tech labs (robotics, energy, biotechnology, VR), engineering workshops, design and media studios (including Aydın Radio and a TV studio), libraries with expanding digital collections, conference halls and abundant cafeterias and social spaces. The Bahçelievler campus adds the Dental Practice & Research Center and the language school. Student life is famously energetic, with 90+ student clubs, spring festivals, guest speakers and sports, and a free inter-campus shuttle, career center and international office keep everything connected and supported.
Student services & campus life
IAU surrounds its huge, diverse community with comprehensive support. A dedicated International Office handles admissions, visas, residence permits and orientation for its 6,500+ international students, while the School of Foreign Languages builds English (and other) proficiency. Health services (with the on-campus hospital), counseling, academic advising and special-needs support look after well-being, and a strong Career Center leverages 10,000+ solution partners for internships and placements behind a ~84% employment rate. Campus life is vibrant: 90+ clubs across sports, music, entrepreneurship and academics, frequent seminars with famous figures, model UN, film festivals and the lively spring festival, all on urban campuses in the heart of Istanbul.
Accreditations & recognition
IAU holds a strong accreditation portfolio. Beyond Turkey’s YÖK, its engineering carries MÜDEK with the European EUR-ACE label, its science and humanities FEDEK, its teacher-training EPDAD, its communication programs İLEDAK, and its health programs SABAK, while its English prep is Pearson Assured and its Pilotage SHGM-certified. Crucially, the European Commission awarded IAU the ECTS Label and Diploma Supplement Label, so its credits and diplomas are transparent and easily recognised across Europe, “the doors of Europe are open” to IAU graduates. It is a member of EURAS (Eurasian Universities Union), an active Erasmus+ participant, has undergone an EUA institutional evaluation, and is ranked by QS, THE and RUR, confirming both national standing and growing international recognition.

What students say
I was nervous about moving to Istanbul, but settling in was easier than I thought. The international office helped me from day one.
What I like most is the balance: Pharmacy classes are taken seriously, but festivals, sports and clubs keep university life fun.
As an international student I felt welcome from the first week. There are students here from dozens of countries and the university knows how to support us.
