History & milestones

EMU’s origins date to 1979, when it was founded as the Institute of Higher Technology, offering three-year courses in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering to just over 100 students. A defining milestone arrived in 1986, when an agreement between the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and the Republic of Turkey transformed the institute into a fully fledged state university, officially named Eastern Mediterranean University, with the backing of Turkey’s Council of Higher Education. The decades that followed brought rapid expansion: faculties of Engineering, Arts & Sciences, Business & Economics and a School of Computing and Technology in the late 1980s; Architecture (1990), Law (1996), Communication & Media Studies (1997) and Education (1999) through the 1990s; and full membership of the European University Association and the International Association of Universities in 2005. The 2010s added Health Sciences and a School of Justice (2010), Pharmacy (2011), Medicine (2012) and finally Dentistry (2019), completing EMU’s evolution from a small engineering institute into a top-ranked comprehensive university with more than four decades of academic excellence.

Famagusta, the seaside advantage

EMU’s main campus sits just 3 km from the centre of Famagusta (Gazimağusa) and a short distance from the island’s beautiful eastern coastline. Famagusta is the second-largest city in the TRNC (population around 35,000), historic, walled and rich in medieval architecture, from ancient Salamis to its Venetian fortresses. Students enjoy gorgeous beaches, a sunny Mediterranean climate, and a city centre packed with cafés, restaurants and shops geared to student life. The community is genuinely safe and welcoming, with a notably low crime rate, while the cost of living is far lower than in Western Europe or major Turkish cities. The island is well connected, by regular flights via nearby Ercan Airport and by ferry, to mainland Turkey and the wider region, so weekend trips to Kyrenia and Nicosia are easy. EMU is consistently ranked the #1 university in Northern Cyprus and is the first and only TRNC institution to enter the QS World University Rankings. It placed #691 in the QS World University Rankings 2026, appears in the 501-600 band of the Times Higher Education world rankings (and the 601-800 band in more recent THE editions, still the top-ranked institution in the TRNC), ranks #782 in U.S. News Best Global Universities, and #175 in the QS Emerging Europe & Central Asia regional table. Academics & language of instruction

EMU offers around 141 academic programs across 12 faculties and 4 schools, plus a Foreign Languages and English Preparatory School, over 100 undergraduate programs (bachelor’s and two-year associate degrees) and 100+ postgraduate programs (master’s and PhD). The primary language of instruction is English, ideal for international students; a number of vocational and a few bachelor’s programs are taught in Turkish for local students, and EMU has introduced select Arabic-medium options (such as a Pharmacy track) to serve students from the Middle East. Students who need to strengthen their English first study at the English Preparatory School, which is accredited by Pearson Edexcel. Across every level, curricula are designed to international standards and emphasise practical training alongside theory.

Faculties & specializations

EMU’s breadth means a student can complete their entire journey, from a two-year diploma to a PhD, in one institution. Notable clusters include:

• Faculty of Engineering, one of EMU’s flagships, with Civil, Electrical & Electronic, Computer, Mechanical, Software and Industrial Engineering. Several programs are ABET-accredited (US standard) and supported by extensive labs, workshops and a Technology Hall.
• Faculty of Medicine, a 6-year English-medium MD run as a joint program with Marmara University (one of Turkey’s top medical schools), with pre-clinical years in Famagusta and clinical training in affiliated hospitals; the first accredited medical training in North Cyprus.

EMU is affordable for its calibre; fees are quoted in US dollars, and the figures below are approximate annual guidance, exact current fees appear in the tuition table above:

• Associate (2-year) programs: roughly $2,222-3,370 / year
• Bachelor’s programs: ~$4,838-5,848 / year for most fields (business and arts/sciences around $4,839; engineering around $5,848)
• Professional/clinical bachelor’s: Pharmacy ~$8,683, Health Sciences ~$8,200, Dentistry ~$17,000, Medicine ~$18,250

Crucially, EMU is very generous with scholarships: academic merit awards of 25% or 50% tuition waivers are commonly granted to qualified international students, a large share of foreign undergraduates study on a 50% scholarship, with a limited number of 100% waivers for top applicants. There are also sibling discounts, early/cash payment discounts, country-specific campaigns, and acceptance of government Türkiye Scholarships. Graduate studies

Graduate education is a cornerstone of EMU, overseen by its Institute of Graduate Studies and Research. The university runs 50+ master’s specialisations (M.A., M.S., MBA, MArch) and around 14 doctoral programs, with both thesis and non-thesis master’s tracks. Campus & facilities

EMU operates from a single, integrated Famagusta campus, green, walkable and self-contained, with all twelve faculties within walking distance of one another. At its heart is a large, modern multi-floor Central Library (open extended hours, 24 hours during exams) with tens of thousands of books, major online databases, group study rooms and computer labs. Science, engineering and design students work in specialised laboratories, workshops and studios, supported by research centres in fields such as biotechnology and robotics. The campus houses 20+ dormitory complexes with capacity for around 11,000 students, furnished, air-conditioned, with high-speed internet, study lounges and cafeterias. Its showpiece is the Lala Mustafa Paşa Sports Complex: a 5,000-seat stadium, a 3,500-seat indoor arena, a tartan athletics track, fitness centres, and tennis and basketball courts, plus the rare perk of the EMU Beach Club just 500 m away, where students swim and play beach volleyball by the sea.

Student services & campus life

EMU surrounds its huge international community with comprehensive support. A dedicated International Student Services Office handles orientation, airport pickups, residence permits, bank accounts and SIM cards, while academic advisors guide every student’s progress. The on-campus Health Center is staffed by around 13 doctors and health professionals with a small pharmacy and an ambulance for emergencies, and the PDRAM psychological counselling centre offers free, confidential support and workshops. The “EMU Without Barriers” office ensures the campus is accessible and inclusive for students with disabilities, and a Career Center runs CV workshops, interview prep and career fairs.
