Why European University of Lefke

European University of Lefke (EUL) is a state-affiliated foundation university in Northern Cyprus, offering international students a high-quality, English-medium education in a stunning Mediterranean setting. Founded in 1990, it has grown into a comprehensive institution of around 10,000 students from roughly 77 countries, organised into 12 faculties and 7 schools with about 139 programs from two-year diplomas through to the PhD. EUL is known for its strong infrastructure, an unusually broad set of international accreditations, affordable tuition and generous scholarships, virtually every international undergraduate receives at least a 50% tuition waiver. Ranked among the world’s top 900 by QS, it combines genuine academic credibility with a peaceful, scenic campus that students describe as a second home.

History & milestones

EUL was established in 1989 by the Cyprus Science Foundation and officially began its academic activities in 1990, initially as a member of the Balkan Universities Network and with the support of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. From a handful of founding faculties it has expanded steadily into its current 12 faculties and multiple schools, plus an Institute of Graduate Studies & Research, while enrolment has risen to around 10,000 students. A defining strength from the outset is that all departments have been accredited by Turkey’s Higher Education Council (YÖK) since day one, giving EUL recognition and credibility from its very beginning. Over the decades it has become the leading university in the western part of Northern Cyprus and one of the region’s fastest-growing, attracting students from across Africa, Asia, the Middle East and beyond to a genuinely multicultural hub of learning.

Lefke, the hillside advantage

EUL’s single, integrated campus sits on a picturesque hillside overlooking Morphou Bay in the historic town of Lefke (Lefka), surrounded by one of the island’s richest natural environments, orange groves, palm-lined streets and views toward the Troodos Mountains, with a mild Mediterranean climate and 300+ sunny days a year. The setting offers a calm, focused study atmosphere away from big-city noise, yet stays well connected: roughly 45 minutes from the capital Nicosia (Lefkoşa), about an hour from Kyrenia (Girne) and Ercan International Airport, and around 80 minutes from Famagusta. The cost of living is low, the community safe and welcoming, and nearby beaches and outdoor recreation make weekends easy, the best of both worlds: a serene academic retreat with convenient access to the wider attractions of Cyprus.

Vision & mission

EUL’s vision is to be an autonomous, innovative institution at the forefront of science and education and a model of multicultural diversity and academic excellence, open to change, producing new knowledge and technology that benefits society, and supporting the economic, social and cultural development of its community. Its mission is to deliver up-to-date, international-standard education, to produce research that addresses societal needs, and to train honest, innovative and socially responsible professionals with critical thinking, creativity and ethical values. The university upholds academic freedom as a cornerstone of teaching and research and actively fosters intercultural competence. As a signatory of the Magna Charta Universitatum, EUL formally commits to the principles of academic freedom and institutional autonomy shared by hundreds of leading universities worldwide.

Rankings & recognition

Though relatively young, EUL is making a clear mark internationally. It is placed in the 851-900 band of the QS World University Rankings 2026, within the world’s top 900 universities, appears in Webometrics at around #2537 globally (7th in Cyprus), and in the SCImago Institutions Rankings 2025 at roughly #3385 globally (9th in Cyprus). Most strikingly, EUL has been recognised for excellence in Environmental Sciences research, ranking within the top 100 worldwide in that subject area according to SCImago, outperforming many larger, older universities. These results, combined with EUL’s steady rise across rankings, give prospective students confidence that its degrees are held in genuine esteem.

Academics & language of instruction

EUL offers around 80 associate and undergraduate programs and 59 postgraduate (master’s and doctoral) programs across engineering, business, law, arts and sciences, communication, education, agriculture and the health sciences. The primary language of instruction is English, making the university accessible to students worldwide, with an English Preparatory School for those who need to strengthen their language skills first and some Turkish-medium tracks for local students. Curricula are designed to align with international standards, many carry external accreditations, and classes are kept small for personalised attention, while campus media outlets, design studios and well-equipped labs ensure plenty of hands-on learning.

Faculties & specializations

EUL’s breadth lets students specialise deeply while learning across disciplines. Key clusters include:

  • Faculty of Engineering, Civil, Computer, Electrical & Electronics, Software and Biomedical Engineering, with strengths in earthquake-resistant design, AI/robotics and renewable energy; programs are MÜDEK / EUR-ACE and ASIIN accredited.
  • Faculty of Economics & Administrative Sciences, Business Administration, Economics, Banking & Finance, International Relations and Management Information Systems, several FIBAA-accredited, plus an MBA.
  • Faculty of Arts & Sciences, Psychology, English Language & Literature, Translation, Mathematics and Molecular Biology & Genetics, with FEDEK accreditation.
  • Faculty of Architecture, Architecture and Interior Architecture, with design studios and a Mediterranean, sustainability-focused curriculum.
  • Faculty of Communication Sciences, Journalism, Radio-TV & Cinema, PR & Advertising and Visual Communication Design, with the campus EUL TV & Radio studios.
  • Health cluster, Faculties of Health Sciences (Nursing, Nutrition & Dietetics, Physiotherapy), Pharmacy, Dentistry and Medicine, with clinical training, on-campus labs and AHPGS/SABAK accreditation.
  • Faculties of Agricultural Sciences & Technologies, Education and Law, plus vocational schools, including EPDAD-accredited teacher training and distinctive horticulture/agribusiness programs.

Tuition & scholarships

EUL is exceptionally affordable; fees are quoted in euros, and the figures below are approximate annual guidance, exact current fees appear in the tuition table above:

  • Associate (2-year) programs: roughly €2,300 / year
  • Bachelor’s programs: about €2,300 / year for most fields, rising to ~€3,100 for Pharmacy and ~€5,500 for Dentistry (and higher for Medicine) given their intensive clinical components
  • Master’s: around €2,400 / year
  • PhD: around €6,000 / year

What makes EUL stand out is the scale of its scholarships: virtually all international students receive an automatic 50% tuition waiver, so the prices above are often close to what students actually pay, and high-achieving applicants can secure 75% or 100% awards. There are also sibling discounts, sports/talent scholarships, graduate assistantships (with stipends and tuition remission for master’s and PhD students), country-specific schemes, and acceptance of government Türkiye Scholarships. Combined with Lefke’s low cost of living, it is realistic to earn a reputable, internationally accredited degree for well under €3,000 a year.

Graduate studies

EUL’s Institute of Graduate Studies & Research coordinates around 59 postgraduate programs, mostly master’s (M.A., M.Sc., MBA, M.Ed.) with both thesis and non-thesis tracks, alongside a growing set of PhD programs. Popular master’s options include the MBA, M.Sc. degrees in Civil and Computer Engineering, M.A. in International Relations, M.Sc. in Health Sciences/Public Health and M.Ed. in Educational Administration, while doctoral study spans Business Administration, Educational Sciences, Engineering, International Relations and specialised health fields such as Prosthodontics. Research is supported by centres including the Environmental Sustainability Research Centre and an Advanced Research Centre, with graduate students often serving as research or teaching assistants, publishing in journals and presenting at conferences. The result is rigorous, well-supported postgraduate study in a genuinely international environment.

Campus & facilities

EUL’s self-contained campus blends modern facilities with natural beauty. Air-conditioned smart classrooms sit alongside specialised engineering, science and design labs, computer centres and EUL TV & Radio studios, while a rich central library offers print and digital collections, group study rooms and databases such as EBSCO, ScienceDirect and JSTOR. On-campus dormitories (separate male and female buildings, furnished with Wi-Fi, lounges and laundry) house students close to class, and dining ranges from a main cafeteria to cafés serving Turkish/Cypriot, international, halal and vegetarian options. A sports complex provides a gym, football field, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts and an athletics track, and campus conveniences include a bookstore, banking/ATMs, a postal office, prayer rooms and a mosque, all under campus-wide Wi-Fi and 24/7 security.

Student services & campus life

EUL surrounds students with comprehensive support. A busy International Office handles airport pickups, orientation and visa/residence-permit processes for its large foreign community, while the Registrar and Student Affairs manage records, registration and ID cards. A Counseling & Psychological Guidance Center offers confidential support and workshops on stress, time management and study skills; a Career Services centre runs CV and interview workshops and career fairs; and a campus Health Centre provides consultations, first aid and referrals. The Disability Support Service ensures accessible facilities and exam accommodations. Campus life is vibrant, with an active Student Union and many clubs, academic, cultural (African and Middle Eastern student associations among them), and hobby-based, plus the famous multi-day Spring Festival, International Cultural Day, orientation events and inter-university sports, all building a close-knit, supportive community.

Accreditations & recognition

EUL holds one of the broadest accreditation portfolios in the region. Beyond Turkey’s YÖK and North Cyprus’s YÖDAK, its programs carry respected German and Turkish marks: ASIIN (engineering and science), MÜDEK / EUR-ACE (engineering), FIBAA (business), AHPGS and SABAK (health), AQAS, FEDEK (arts and sciences) and EPDAD (education). It is a member of the International Association of Universities (IAU), the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World (FUIW), the ASIIN Global University Network of Excellence (AGUNE) and the American Council on Education (ACE), a Magna Charta Universitatum signatory, and an active Erasmus+ participant with bilateral agreements across the UK, USA, Turkey and beyond. For students this means a degree that is recognised and portable worldwide, and quality that is regularly audited and kept current.

Special highlights & why choose

EUL’s appeal is the rare combination of international recognition with affordability and a beautiful, safe setting. Its QS top-900 standing, world-top-100 Environmental Sciences research, EUR-ACE/MÜDEK and ASIIN engineering, FIBAA business and English-medium Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy are notable strengths for the region, backed by an automatic 50% scholarship, generous merit awards and a low cost of living. What students say

The professors in Law actually know their students by name. Classes are hands-on and the labs were better equipped than I expected.

What I like most is the balance: Health Sciences classes are taken seriously, but festivals, sports and clubs keep university life fun.
