Why Kocaeli University of Health and Technology
Kocaeli University of Health and Technology (KOSTU) is a dynamic private university in northwestern Turkey, known for its focus on health sciences and technological innovation. Located in Kocaeli, near Istanbul, it has quickly built a reputation for quality education in medicine-related and technology fields. With about 4,000+ students (roughly 10% international, from 30+ countries) across five faculties, backed by the experienced European Education Foundation (35+ years in education), it offers a modern learning environment, specialised faculties like Dentistry and Pharmacy, English-language program options and notably affordable tuition, a unique, focused choice for students who want to study in Turkey.
History & milestones
KOSTU began in 2009 as the European Vocational School (Avrupa Meslek Yüksekokulu), with strong two-year programs in health and technical fields. In 2020 it was elevated to full university status as Kocaeli Sağlık ve Teknoloji Üniversitesi, allowing it to offer bachelor’s and graduate degrees. It draws on the legacy of the European Education Group, with 35+ years in education. In just a few years it has established five faculties, opened advanced labs and a university Oral & Dental Health Application and Research Center, formed international partnerships (including with Peking University) and joined Erasmus+, evolving from a niche vocational school into a comprehensive university at the forefront of health and technology education.
Kocaeli, near Istanbul, affordable
KOSTU’s main campus is in the Başiskele district of Kocaeli, the second-largest city in the Marmara region, an important industrial and commercial hub between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. Studying here offers urban convenience and natural beauty (overlooking the Gulf of İzmit), a lower cost of living than Istanbul, efficient public transport and a lively cultural scene with museums, parks and shopping. Being about an hour from Istanbul by car or train, students can easily visit Turkey’s largest city on weekends while enjoying a quieter, more affordable community during the week, and Kocaeli’s strong industrial base offers internship and career opportunities.
Vision & mission
KOSTU’s vision is to be a center of excellence in higher education and scientific research, especially in health sciences and technology, producing graduates who are innovative, globally aware and capable of leadership, with research motivation, creativity, social responsibility and an entrepreneurial mindset. Its mission is to provide a holistic environment where theory and practice are synthesised with technology, supporting students’ academic, professional, social and artistic development through modern, hands-on teaching. It emphasises scientific freedom, equal opportunity, integrity, respect for nature and humanity, and internationalisation without losing cultural identity, integrating Turkish values with global best practices.
Rankings & recognition
As a very young, specialised university, KOSTU is at the start of its ranking journey. Webometrics 2024 places it around 206th in Turkey (≈20,853rd globally), and uniRank lists it as a new entry, expected for an institution that only gained university status in 2020. It is not yet in the QS or THE global tables, but ranking figures understate its strengths: for its size it has excellent facilities and faculty in its focus areas, is already considered one of the best universities for health and technology education in the Kocaeli region, and is rising in national student-preference lists each year. As its research output and graduate base grow, its standing is expected to climb.
Academics & language of instruction
KOSTU offers a focused portfolio across 5 faculties, 2 vocational schools and a Graduate Education Institute, about 9 bachelor’s, ~10 master’s and 17 associate programs (PhD programs in development). It has a clear strength in health sciences and technology: most programs run in Turkish, with English-medium options in key fields (Dentistry, Pharmacy, Business Administration, and English/Turkish tracks for Computer and Software Engineering). An English Preparatory Year and Turkish (TÖMER) classes support students who need them. Learning is hands-on and lab-based, dental clinics, pharmacy and science labs, nursing simulation wards and engineering workshops, and the curriculum follows the Bologna/ECTS framework for international recognition.
Faculties & specializations
- Faculty of Dentistry, a 5-year DDS in English or Turkish, with simulation labs and an on-campus Oral & Dental Health Application and Research Center where students treat real patients; specialisations (Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, Endodontics) at advanced level.
- Faculty of Pharmacy, a 5-year program (English or Turkish) covering pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacognosy and clinical pharmacy, with formulation labs.
- Faculty of Health Sciences, Nursing, Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation and Nutrition & Dietetics, with simulation wards and hospital internships.

Tuition & scholarships
KOSTU’s tuition is among the most affordable for a health-and-tech private university; fees are quoted in US dollars, and the figures below are approximate annual guidance, exact current fees (after any scholarship) appear in the tuition table above:
- Associate (2-year) programs: roughly $1,000-2,000 / year
- Bachelor’s (most fields): about $2,500-4,000 / year (Nursing, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Business, Computer/Software Engineering)
- Pharmacy: about $13,000 / year
- Dentistry: a list price near $19,000 / year, with scholarships commonly bringing it to roughly $9,500-12,500
- Master’s programs: about $1,750 / year (non-thesis) to $2,500 / year (thesis)
KOSTU offers merit, need-based and partner-country scholarships of 25-100% (for example, halving the Dentistry fee), plus sibling discounts and acceptance of government Türkiye Scholarships; graduate students may receive assistantships or waivers. With Kocaeli’s low cost of living, this makes a dental, pharmacy or health-tech degree genuinely attainable.
Graduate studies
KOSTU’s Graduate Education Institute runs about 10 master’s programs concentrated in its strengths, in thesis (research) and non-thesis (professional) tracks, often with evening/weekend classes for working students. Offerings include M.Sc. in Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation, Women’s Health & Diseases Nursing, Occupational Health & Safety, Information Systems Engineering, and distinctive health programs in Pharmacognosy and Aromatherapy. Thesis students conduct original research with close faculty supervision, partnering with local hospitals for clinical studies or developing health-tech prototypes that reflect the university’s health-and-technology synergy. PhD programs (in health sciences, pharmaceutical sciences or engineering) are in development as faculty research and labs mature; meanwhile KOSTU’s strong master’s training, conference support and publications position graduates well for doctorates at top Turkish or international universities.
Campus & facilities
KOSTU’s modern Başiskele campus features smart classrooms and specialised facilities: an on-campus Oral & Dental Health center with dental chairs and clinics; pharmacy and science labs (chemistry, microbiology, physiology); nursing simulation wards with high-fidelity patient simulators; and computer, software and innovation labs with a tech-incubation centre. A modern library offers print and digital collections, international databases, multimedia rooms and study spaces. Beyond academics, a Health, Culture and Sports Center runs clubs and events, and a sports complex provides indoor courts, a fitness gym, outdoor fields and a swimming pool, alongside a student activity centre, cafeterias and an auditorium. The campus is accessible (a Disabled Student Unit), secure, and served by free shuttles and city transit.
Student services & campus life
KOSTU offers holistic, personalised support to its close-knit community. While large on-campus dorms are limited, Student Affairs and the International Office secure places in partner private dormitories, help with apartments and roommates, and even provide a guest house for new arrivals, with Kocaeli’s moderate rents a real advantage. A campus medical clinic and free, confidential counseling (professional psychologists) support well-being, and a Disabled Student Unit ensures accessibility. Career services link students to internships and jobs in Kocaeli’s hospitals and industry, while Turkish (TÖMER) classes and cultural-orientation programs help 400+ international students from 30+ countries integrate. With debate, music/arts, engineering and travel clubs, festivals, sports tournaments, a Student Council, free shuttles and campus security, student life is welcoming, active and safe.
Accreditations & recognition
KOSTU is fully accredited by Turkey’s YÖK, so its degrees are officially recognised at home and, through equivalence agreements, abroad. As Turkey is part of the Bologna Process, its programs use ECTS for easy credit and diploma recognition across Europe, and it runs Erasmus+ exchange with European partner universities. Beyond Erasmus, it has formed an international partnership with Peking University and draws on its founding European Education Group network, and its professional programs (dentistry, pharmacy, nursing) follow the relevant health-ministry standards for licensure, with engineering programs positioned to pursue MÜDEK accreditation as they grow. Its degrees are recognised for graduates returning to or working across the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Special highlights & why choose
KOSTU’s signature is affordable, hands-on health-and-technology education near Istanbul. Its English-medium Dentistry and Pharmacy, a rare combination in Turkey, trained in the university’s own Oral & Dental Health center and pharmaceutical labs, make it a top choice for international students from regions where dental and pharmacy places are scarce, and at competitive fees with generous scholarships. Complementing these are Nursing and Physiotherapy with simulation wards, Computer and Software Engineering with a tech-incubation centre, and forward-looking vocational programs like Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Technology. Add the backing of a 35-year education group, a Peking University partnership, Erasmus+ mobility, a small, personalised community with modern labs and a sports complex with pool, lower living costs than Istanbul (an hour away), and genuinely accessible tuition, and Kocaeli University of Health and Technology is a focused, practical and value-driven choice for students set on the health and technology professions.
