Altinbas University
One of Turkey's most international universities, English-taught medicine, engineering and business in the heart of Istanbul.
At a glance
Why Altinbas University
Altınbaş University is a dynamic private (foundation) university in Istanbul, and one of the most genuinely international institutions in Turkey. Founded in 2008, originally as Istanbul Kemerburgaz University, it has grown remarkably fast into a comprehensive university known for medicine, engineering and business, all delivered in the cultural and economic capital of Turkey.
What sets Altınbaş apart is its global outlook: a majority of its students come from abroad (students from 80-100+ countries, with roughly 50-60% international enrolment), and most flagship programs are taught in English. It is one of very few private Turkish universities to offer Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and a full slate of engineering programs under one roof. As its motto promises, the university aims to “bring out the best in you”, combining quality education, a multicultural campus and the energy of Istanbul.
History & milestones
Altınbaş began in 2008, established by the Mehmet Altınbaş Education and Culture Foundation, and welcomed its first students in the 2011-2012 academic year. Founded as Istanbul Kemerburgaz University, it rebranded to Altınbaş University in 2017, taking the name of its founding family and benefactor. In little over a decade it has expanded to 10 faculties, opened specialized medical, dental and law schools, built 150+ international partnerships, and become one of the fastest-growing foundation universities in the country, with rising research output and a famously high international-student ratio. Today it enrols 10,000+ students and is repeatedly cited as #1 in Turkey for its proportion of international students.
Istanbul & the three campuses
Altınbaş is spread across three urban campuses in Istanbul, each tailored to a cluster of disciplines:
- Mahmutbey Campus (Bağcılar), the main technology campus on the European side, home to Engineering & Architecture, Economics & Administrative Sciences, Business and Applied Sciences. It houses engineering and robotics labs, design studios, large lecture halls, the central library and the on-site Altınbaş Teknopark technology park, plus cafeterias, a gym and study spaces.
- Bakırköy Campus, the health sciences campus, hosting the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy. It sits next to the affiliated Medical Park Bahçelievler teaching hospital and the university’s own Altınbaş Dental Hospital, a teaching clinic and public dental hospital, giving students anatomy labs, simulation centres and high-volume clinical practice.
- Gayrettepe Campus (Şişli), the city campus in Istanbul’s business district, home to Law, Communication and the social sciences. Set in a modern high-rise among corporate HQs, banks and media houses, it offers smart classrooms, a moot-court room and law library, and media/editing studios, ideal for internships and networking.
A free inter-campus shuttle links all three, and each sits close to Istanbul’s metro lines. Living in Istanbul gives students a historic, cosmopolitan city that is welcoming to international students, with halal food widely available and short flights across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Vision & mission
Altınbaş’s vision is to be the “Global University of Türkiye”, internationally recognized and a bridge between Turkey and the world. Its mission is to “produce people capable of adding value to themselves and to society.” In practice this means a learner-centered, values-driven education built on equality, freedom of thought and human rights, producing graduates who are knowledgeable, creative, entrepreneurial and socially responsible.
Rankings & recognition
Though young, Altınbaş has begun to feature in major rankings. It debuted in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025 in the 1501+ band, placing around 34th in Turkey and 12th among the country’s foundation (private) universities, and also appears in THE’s Asia rankings. Webometrics positions it near 147th in Turkey (~6,757 globally) and uniRank around 103rd nationally. It earned full institutional accreditation from YÖKAK (Turkey’s Higher Education Quality Council) in 2023, and appears in research-impact tables such as SCImago. The university’s standout metric, however, is internationalisation: its share of international students ranks it first in Turkey and among the top universities worldwide on that indicator, squarely matching its “global university” identity.
Academics & language of instruction
Altınbaş offers 100+ programs across all levels, roughly 26 bachelor’s, 11 associate, 60+ master’s and a dozen-plus doctoral programs. Many are taught entirely in English, including Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Engineering and Business, which makes the university a natural choice for international students. Other programs are in Turkish or run as dual-language tracks, and a one-year English preparatory option is available where needed. Every program follows the European ECTS credit system with Diploma Supplements, so credits transfer easily abroad, and ambitious students can take a double major or minor across faculties.
Faculties & specializations
Altınbaş is organised into 10 faculties plus a graduate institute and two vocational schools. Its breadth, a rare full health cluster alongside strong engineering, business and law, lets students specialise deeply or combine fields through double majors and minors:
- Faculty of Medicine, a 6-year MD taught in English, with a modern integrated curriculum, early clinical exposure from year two, USMLE preparation, high-fidelity simulation labs and clinical rotations at the affiliated Medical Park hospital. Students can join research in oncology, genetics and public health, and the faculty supports elective rotations abroad.
- Faculty of Dentistry, a 5-year DDS in English with extensive hands-on training at the Altınbaş Dental Hospital (a high-volume teaching clinic), plus postgraduate specialisations in Orthodontics, Periodontology and Pediatric Dentistry and research in implants and aesthetic dentistry.
- Faculty of Pharmacy, a 5-year EU-aligned program covering pharmaceutical sciences, clinical pharmacy and pharmacology, with modern chemistry/pharmaceutics labs, industry internships and a master’s in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
- Faculty of Engineering & Natural Sciences, Computer, Software, Electrical-Electronics, Mechanical, Civil, Industrial and Biomedical Engineering plus basic sciences, with project-based learning, 3D-printing/CNC workshops, AI/IoT/renewable-energy labs and award-winning TEKNOFEST teams; double majors (e.g. Electrical Engineering + Computer Science) are encouraged.
- Faculty of Economics, Administrative & Social Sciences, Business Administration (BBA), International Trade & Finance, Economics, International Relations, Political Science, Sociology and Psychology; strengths include marketing, entrepreneurship, international business and finance, with guest lectures from bank executives and Borsa Istanbul visits, plus a sought-after MSc in Clinical Psychology.
- Faculty of Law, the standard Turkish-law program plus a unique Turkish-German dual-degree (with a German partner faculty) leading to qualifications in two systems; courses span international, EU and arbitration law, with a simulated courtroom and moot-court competitions.
- Faculty of Communication & Fine Arts, Communication, Public Relations & Advertising, Media & Visual Arts, Cinema-TV plus graphic, interior and fashion design, taught hands-on with media studios and editing suites and internships across Istanbul’s media industry.
- Faculty of Applied Sciences, practical, industry-linked fields such as aviation management, banking & insurance and related programs, taught with sector partners.
- Vocational Schools, about 11 two-year associate programs including Civil Aviation Cabin Services, Aviation Management, Tourism & Hotel Management, Computer Programming, Banking & Insurance, Medical Imaging, Anaesthesia and First Aid & Emergency, with strong internship ties.
