Why Atilim University
Atilim University is a top-ranked private (foundation) university in Ankara, Turkey’s capital. Founded in 1997, it has grown into one of the country’s most respected private universities, known for English-medium programs, a strong research culture, modern facilities and globally recognized degrees. With around 9,000 students including 1,000+ international students from 60+ countries, a 600+ strong faculty and an unusually low ~13:1 student-to-faculty ratio, Atilim offers academic excellence in a supportive, well-resourced environment, and rare assets like its own flight-training center and one of Turkey’s most accredited engineering faculties.
History & milestones
Atilim was founded on 15 July 1997 by the Atilim Foundation (established 1996) with a mission to “provide quality education, produce science and technology, conduct research, and shed light on the future of the country.” Starting with a handful of faculties and a few hundred students, it expanded over two decades to add Law, Arts & Sciences, Fine Arts & Architecture, Health Sciences and a School of Medicine. It was among the first six foundation universities in Turkey to earn full institutional accreditation from the Higher Education Quality Council, and built standout research strength, opening the Metal Forming Center of Excellence and being chosen by YÖK to specialise in “Hydrogen and Fuel Cells” as a national priority research area. It has featured in TÜBİTAK’s Entrepreneurial & Innovative University Index since 2012 (28th in Turkey in 2023). Now with 28+ years of history, Atilim is firmly established as a leading private university that both imparts and creates knowledge.
Ankara & the campuses
Atilim is based in Ankara, Turkey’s safe, culturally rich and comparatively affordable capital, across three complementary sites:
- İncek Main Campus, a spacious ~250-acre green campus (the “MOG Campus”) about 20 km from the centre, housing most faculties and student life: classroom and laboratory buildings, dormitories, the Kadriye Zaim Library (the largest university library in Ankara), and a major Sports Center with an Olympic pool, courts and an artificial lake.
- Akay City-Center Campus, a downtown high-rise in Kavaklıdere/Çankaya, home to the Graduate School of Social Sciences and evening/executive programs (MBA, master’s), close to ministries, courts and corporate HQs for internships and networking.
- Esenboğa Civil Aviation Training Center, a hangar and training facility at Ankara’s international airport with the university’s own aircraft and flight simulators, where pilot-training and aviation students get hands-on practice at a real airport.
A free shuttle links Akay with the main campus, giving students the calm of İncek and the connectivity of the city.
Vision & mission
Atilim’s mission is to raise qualified individuals equipped with field knowledge at an international level, global citizens conscious of social sensitivity and sustainability, through high-performance teaching and research. Its vision is ambitious: “to always rank among the top 10 Turkish universities and the top 500 worldwide in research and education.” This drive shapes a campus culture that prizes quality, innovation and global engagement, and challenges students to push boundaries.
Rankings & recognition
Atilim is one of Turkey’s best-regarded private universities, the 4th highest-ranked private university in Turkey by Times Higher Education, which lists it in the 1501+ world band and places its Engineering in the global 1001+ range. It also appears in the THE Asia University Rankings 2024 (501-600 band), the QS EECA Rankings 2022 (251-300 in Emerging Europe & Central Asia), and ranks 28th nationally in TÜBİTAK’s Entrepreneurial & Innovative University Index. During its 20th-anniversary year it was even highlighted by THE as among the global top 500, a rare feat for a Turkish university, reflecting a clear upward trajectory toward its top-500 vision.
Academics & language of instruction
Atilim offers 40+ undergraduate programs, 50+ graduate programs and short-cycle associate degrees across seven faculties and several schools. Most programs are taught in English, all engineering, business, aviation and medicine degrees among them, which suits international students and Turkish students seeking global careers; some are offered in both English and Turkish (e.g. Business, Economics), while Law is in Turkish. A robust School of Foreign Languages provides an English preparatory year (Pearson-accredited) plus elective languages, and the curriculum is Bologna-compliant with a Diploma Supplement and interdisciplinary electives across faculties.
Faculties & specializations
- Faculty of Engineering (flagship), Computer, Software, Electrical-Electronics, Industrial, Civil, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Manufacturing, Energy Systems, Automotive and Aerospace Engineering (rare in Turkey, in English), with capstone projects, 150+ labs and EUR-ACE accreditation on eight programs.
- Faculty of Management, Business Administration (English/Turkish), International Trade & Logistics, Economics (English/Turkish), Public Relations & Advertising, Political Science & Public Administration, Public Finance and International Relations, with Model-UN, internships and a global-business focus.
- Faculty of Fine Arts, Design & Architecture + Arts & Sciences, Architecture, Interior Architecture & Environmental Design, Industrial Design, Graphic Design and Fashion & Textile Design, plus English Language & Literature, Translation & Interpretation (FEDEK-accredited), Mathematics and Psychology.
- Faculty of Law, a Turkish-medium LLB with strong legal-English support, moot court, and Ankara’s parliament and courts on hand for internships.
- Faculty of Medicine, a 6-year MD taught in English with USMLE-style content, simulation labs and clinical rotations in Ankara hospitals.
- Faculty of Health Sciences, Nursing, Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation, Nutrition & Dietetics, Audiology and Child Development (English), with clinical placements.

Graduate studies
Atilim’s graduate schools (Natural & Applied Sciences, Social Sciences, Health Sciences) run 50+ master’s and PhD programs with thesis and non-thesis tracks. Highlights include an English MBA (with evening classes at Akay for working professionals), M.Sc. programs in Computer, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil and Information-Systems Engineering plus Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, and M.A. programs in International Relations, Economics, Translation Studies, Psychology and more. PhD programs span Electrical-Electronics, Computer, Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Mathematics, Business Administration and Economics, many tied to funded research (e.g. hydrogen fuel cells at the Metal Forming Center), with conference support and a strong research culture (programs like ATAK and undergraduate research projects feed the pipeline).
Campus & facilities
The İncek campus is genuinely full-service: 150+ laboratories and research centres (mechatronics, aerospace, materials/metal-forming, a Medical Simulation Center), smart lecture halls, design and arts studios, and the Kadriye Zaim Library with vast print and digital collections. Recreation is exceptional, a large Sports Center with an indoor gym, fitness center, Olympic-size pool, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, plus an artificial lake and green spaces. On-campus dormitories (separate for men and women), cafeterias and food courts with halal and international options, health services, a bookstore and banking complete a self-contained academic village with campus-wide Wi-Fi.
Student services & campus life
Atilim supports students comprehensively: an International Student Office for admissions, visas, residence permits and orientation; counselling and academic advising with close mentorship thanks to small classes; health services; and a busy career center with fairs and internship placement across Ankara’s industries. Dozens of student clubs drive a vibrant campus life, cultural festivals on the lawns, robotics and engineering competitions, fashion shows, Model UN and sports teams, and Erasmus+ exchange opens semesters abroad. With dormitories, sports and dining on campus and a free city shuttle, students get a balanced, well-rounded experience.
Accreditations & recognition
Atilim holds an exceptionally strong accreditation portfolio: full institutional accreditation from Turkey’s Higher Education Quality Council (among the first six foundation universities to earn it); MÜDEK / EUR-ACE accreditation on eight engineering programs (ABET-equivalent, ENAEE-authorised); FEDEK (Translation & Interpretation); TURAK (Tourism & Hotel Management); and Pearson Assured (English prep). It is a member of the European University Association, holds an Erasmus+ Charter with 30+ European partners, maintains sister-university ties (including the University of the Incarnate Word in the USA), and issues an EU Diploma Supplement. Its degrees are recognised by education ministries across the Middle East and Africa, including Egypt, Jordan, Palestine and Saudi Arabia, so graduates can validate their diploma easily at home or abroad.
Special highlights & why choose
Atilim’s distinctive strengths set it apart: a School of Civil Aviation with a real flight-training center (few universities can offer actual flight hours and simulators in-degree); internationally accredited engineering with rare programs like Aerospace; a national hydrogen and fuel-cell research mandate; and an English-medium Faculty of Medicine with simulation labs and hospital rotations. Add Ankara’s biggest university library, an Olympic-pool sports center, a top-4 private-university standing and an affordable, scholarship-friendly fee structure, and Atilim University is a compelling choice for ambitious international students who want a research-driven, globally recognised education in Turkey’s capital.

What students say
I was nervous about moving to Ankara, but settling in was easier than I thought. The international office helped me from day one.
What I like most is the balance: Arts classes are taken seriously, but festivals, sports and clubs keep university life fun.
Most of my classes are in English and the instructors are patient with international students. My academic English improved a lot in the first year.
