Why Bezmialem Vakif University

Bezmialem Vakıf University (BVU) is a distinguished private, non-profit health-sciences university in Istanbul, specializing entirely in medicine and health. Officially founded as a university in 2010, it traces its roots to 1845, when it began as the first modern hospital of the Ottoman Empire, giving it over 175 years of healthcare heritage now channelled into a modern institution. With around 3,200 students, ~700 academic staff and a remarkable ~1:8 faculty ratio, BVU is one of Turkey’s first thematic research universities in Health and Life Sciences, and one of very few that owns and teaches in its own hospitals on two continents.

History & milestones

BVU originates from the Bezmiâlem Gureba Hospital, founded in 1845 by Bezmiâlem Valide Sultan (mother of Sultan Abdülmecid I) as the Ottoman Empire’s first charity hospital, providing free care to those in need. In 2010 the historic hospital was transformed into a university by YÖK approval, with faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Health Sciences built on its medical legacy and the hospital becoming a teaching hospital. It graduated its first cohorts by 2017, and its programs have for years ranked among Turkey’s top choices by entrance-exam preference. It opened pioneering research centres (the Phytotherapy and Traditional Medicine centres), expanded to additional campuses and clinics, and forged a landmark academic partnership with Johns Hopkins University, integrating elements of its curriculum and enabling clinical training abroad.

Istanbul, campuses on two continents

BVU’s facilities span Istanbul’s historic core and modern districts, on both sides of the Bosphorus:

  • Vatan (Topkapı) Campus, Fatih (main), centred on the original 1845 hospital site, home to Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and much of Health Sciences, with the adjacent Bezmialem Vakıf University Hospital for seamless clinical training, plus modern lecture halls, labs and a large medical library.
  • Eyüp / Şişli Campus, an 11-floor building near the Golden Horn with teaching spaces, a Sports Medicine Center and physiotherapy clinics where Health Sciences students train with real patients.
  • Dragos Campus, Maltepe (Asian side), a state-of-the-art ~35,000 m² university hospital overlooking the Marmara Sea, with robotic surgery, ICUs, simulation labs and clinical-rotation wards.
  • Sultangazi (İlhan Varank) Campus, the Vocational School of Health Services with paramedic, lab and imaging training facilities (MEDEK-accredited).

Add specialty units, the Phytotherapy Center (Turkey’s first herbal-medicine centre), the GETAMER traditional-medicine center and the Beykoz Life Sciences & Biotechnology Institute, and BVU offers a uniquely rich, transcontinental training ground in one of the world’s great cities, well-connected by metro, metrobus and an inter-campus shuttle.

Vision & mission

BVU’s vision is to “become a leading health university taken as an example in education and healthcare services, that leads and directs science and keeps the foundation culture alive.” Its mission rests on four pillars: innovative, student-centred education using the latest science and technology; research and development with tangible outcomes (devices, therapies, systems); high-quality, accessible healthcare through its hospitals; and operating “in light of the values of our civilisation”, empathy, charity and social responsibility, continuing the humanitarian legacy of the 1845 Gureba Hospital.

Rankings & recognition

For a specialised, young university, BVU ranks impressively. It appears in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 (1201-1500 band) and the THE Asia Rankings (top 30 in Turkey, 8th nationally for Teaching). In Turkey’s URAP 2024 it is 27th overall, and notably 3rd among universities founded after 2000 and 5th among all foundation universities. It also features in EduRank 2025 (87th in Turkey) and CWUR. In its niche of medical and health education it consistently punches above its size, with subject-level strength across dozens of research topics.

Academics & language of instruction

BVU offers the full spectrum of health education, from a 2-year technician diploma to doctoral research, across four faculties, a vocational school and several institutes. Instruction is bilingual, roughly 30% English / 70% Turkish overall, with dedicated English-language tracks for the flagship Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy programs that draw international students. Health Sciences programs are taught mainly in Turkish (with technical English), reflecting their close patient contact, and international clinical students typically take Turkish-language support to communicate with patients.

Faculties & specializations

  • Faculty of Medicine, a 6-year MD (English or Turkish), the flagship program, with basic-science, pre-clinical and extensive clinical rotations in BVU’s own hospitals; ECFMG-listed for international licensure.
  • Faculty of Dentistry, a 5-year DDS (English/Turkish) with substantial clinical practice in the university’s dental clinics; ADEE-evaluated.
  • Faculty of Pharmacy, a 5-year bilingual BPharm with a compulsory internship, strong in pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry and clinical pharmacy, aligned with European standards.
  • Faculty of Health Sciences, B.Sc. programs in Nursing, Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation, Nutrition & Dietetics, Audiology, Health Management and Occupational Therapy, combining coursework with clinical practicums.
  • Vocational School of Health Services, 14 two-year associate programs (First & Emergency Aid/paramedic, Medical Imaging, Anaesthesia, Medical & Pathology Laboratory, Dental Prosthetics, Physiotherapy technician, Child Development and more), several MEDEK-accredited.

Tuition & scholarships

Tuition reflects the resource intensity of health education; figures below are approximate annual guidance, exact current fees appear in the tuition table above, and most carry a 10% cash (single-payment) discount:

  • Medicine (MD): $25,000 / year ($22,500 with cash discount)
  • Dentistry (DDS): $24,000 / year ($21,600)
  • Pharmacy: $14,500 / year ($13,050)
  • Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation: ~$10,000 / year; Nutrition & Dietetics: ~$9,000; Audiology: ~$8,000
  • Nursing: ~$6,000 / year; Health Management: ~$5,000 / year
  • Associate (2-year) health programs: ~$3,000-4,000 / year

A 10% sibling discount can combine with the cash discount (up to ~20% off), merit scholarships are awarded by entrance rank, and government Türkiye Scholarships are accepted, while clinical training takes place in the university’s own hospitals at no extra cost.

Graduate studies

Graduate education runs through several institutes, Health Sciences, Life Sciences & Biotechnology, Gastroenterology and Forensic Sciences, offering master’s and PhD programs, mostly research-applied and often English-medium. Representative master’s include Analytical Chemistry, Clinical Pharmacy, Public Health, Medical Microbiology, Physiotherapy and Health Management; PhDs span Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biotechnology and Gastroenterological Sciences. Students access cutting-edge labs, extracting compounds at the Phytotherapy Center, running experiments at the Beykoz Biotechnology Institute, and many secure assistantships, scholarships or tuition waivers, particularly PhD candidates on funded projects.

Campus & facilities

BVU’s defining asset is its own university hospitals, the Vatan teaching hospital and the advanced Dragos hospital (robotic surgery, ICUs), giving students unmatched, high-volume clinical exposure across two continents. Campuses feature simulation centres and clinical-skills labs, science and research laboratories, a Sports Medicine Center, large medical libraries with extensive databases, and unique research units (Phytotherapy, GETAMER traditional medicine, Life Sciences & Biotechnology). Cafeterias, study lounges and green historic surroundings round out the environment; the university does not run on-site dormitories but assists students in finding nearby housing.

Student services & campus life

A dedicated International Relations Office supports foreign students with admissions, visas, residence permits, Turkish-language support and integration, while counselling and student services look after wellbeing. Campus life centres on a focused, tight-knit community of future health professionals, with student clubs, cultural events celebrating its international cohort, and an inter-campus shuttle linking sites. Crucially, learning is woven into real healthcare: students serve and learn alongside experienced doctors, dentists, pharmacists and scientists in busy hospitals, gaining both clinical skill and the institution’s strong ethical, compassionate ethos.

Accreditations & recognition

BVU is accredited by Turkey’s YÖK, and its Medicine program is accredited by TEPDAD (WFME-recognised), listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and ECFMG-listed, meaning graduates are eligible to pursue USMLE, residencies and certification in the United States and elsewhere (subject to exams). Dentistry is evaluated by ADEE, Pharmacy aligns with European pharmacy standards, and the Vocational School achieved Turkey’s first-ever MEDEK vocational-health accreditations. BVU is an EUA member following the Bologna Process, maintains 100+ international collaborations in 49 countries (including 52 Erasmus+ agreements and the Johns Hopkins partnership), and its medical degree is recognised by councils such as Pakistan’s PMDC, so a BVU degree is genuinely portable.

Special highlights & why choose

BVU’s appeal is singular: a 175-year healthcare legacy reborn as a modern, thematic health-sciences university that teaches in its own hospitals on two continents. Its English-track Medicine is ECFMG-listed with a real US licensure pathway and a Johns Hopkins partnership offering clinical electives abroad, rare advantages for aspiring doctors. Add a 1:8 faculty ratio, top-tier national standing for its age, pioneering centres in phytotherapy and biotechnology, and strong scholarship/discount options, and Bezmialem Vakıf University is an outstanding choice for international students who want a focused, prestigious medicine, dentistry, pharmacy or health-sciences education in the heart of Istanbul.
