Halic University (Haliç Üniversitesi) is a prominent private foundation university in Istanbul, established in 1998 along the historic Golden Horn (Haliç) estuary. History & milestones

Halic University was founded on 23 November 1998 by the Foundation for Our Children with Leukemia, giving it a mission rooted in social good and making it one of the first foundation (private non-profit) universities in Turkey. It built early strengths in business, arts and engineering, then expanded into health sciences, a Conservatory and a Medical Faculty by the mid-2000s, positioning itself as a comprehensive institution. Through the 2010s it grew its graduate programs and research, marking its 20th anniversary in 2018 as a dynamic, culturally diverse university. The defining recent milestone was the “Change begins in the Golden Horn” initiative: previously spread across central buildings in Sütlüce, Mecidiyeköy and Şişhane, the university opened a vast, unified campus in the Eyüpsultan (5th Levent) area in 2022, centralising its faculties and students in one modern setting and unlocking further growth.

Rankings & recognition

Despite being relatively young, Halic has risen steadily in the rankings. EduRank 2025 places it 77th in Turkey and around #3,814 globally, a strong position among 170+ Turkish institutions, while URAP 2024 ranks it 173rd nationally and Webometrics 2024 about 138th nationally and ~6,600th worldwide. A particular point of pride is the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, which assess universities against the UN Sustainable Development Goals: in 2024 Halic placed in the world’s top 400 for Quality Education and Reduced Inequalities, and the top 300 for Affordable & Clean Energy, reflecting its social-good roots. While not yet in the research-intensive QS/THE world tables, its trajectory in research output and global initiatives is clearly upward, and it is consistently listed among Turkey’s top foundation universities.

Academics & language of instruction

Halic offers 60+ programs across all levels, around 40+ bachelor’s, 60+ master’s, roughly 8 PhD programs and 19 associate degrees, through 8 faculties, 3 vocational schools, a Conservatory and a graduate institute. Programs are delivered in English and Turkish: Engineering, Business Administration, Medicine and Arts & Sciences offer English tracks (ideal for international students), while some Health Sciences, Fine Arts and Law programs are primarily in Turkish. Students demonstrate proficiency via TOEFL/IELTS or Halic’s internal English exam, or a TÖMER certificate for Turkish programs, and an English (and Turkish) Preparatory School supports those who need it. The curriculum emphasises experiential, applied learning, with research centres and partner hospitals feeding hands-on projects into many programs.

Tuition & scholarships

Halic’s tuition is competitive among Istanbul’s private universities; fees are quoted in US dollars, and the figures below are approximate annual guidance, exact current fees appear in the tuition table above:

• Associate (2-year) programs: roughly $2,500-3,500 / year
• Bachelor’s programs: about $4,800-5,500 / year for most fields (Turkish-taught programs nearer $4,800; English-taught around $5,200)
• Medicine: approximately $18,000 (Turkish) to $24,000 (English) / year, reflecting its intensive clinical resources
• Master’s: ~$6,000-12,000 for the program (around $6,000/year standard, $7,500/year for the MBA and high-demand English programs)
• PhD: ~$12,500 over the program

Halic offers a range of discounts and scholarships: an early-payment discount of up to 15% for paying the year’s tuition upfront, a 10% sibling discount, academic-merit scholarships (up to 15% of next year’s tuition for top first-year students), and sports/arts and need-based awards, many of which can be combined. The English Preparatory School costs about $4,500 for the year (Turkish prep ~$2,000), and the university accepts government Türkiye Scholarships.

Graduate studies

Halic’s Institute of Graduate Studies offers a wide selection of master’s programs (counted at roughly 29-65 across thesis and non-thesis options) and around 6-8 PhD programs. Master’s options span Business and Management (an English MBA, plus Marketing, Finance and Healthcare Management), Engineering (Computer, Electrical-Electronics, Mechanical and Industrial), Arts and Social Sciences (Psychology, literature, Education Management), Health Sciences (Nursing, Physiotherapy, Public Health) and Fine Arts and Sport Sciences. Doctoral programs include Business Administration, an engineering discipline, Molecular Biology & Genetics, history/literature, nursing/health-sciences education and architecture. The 2022 campus is genuinely full-service. Academically, it offers over 500 modern classrooms, 14 large amphitheatres, 65+ specialised laboratories (engineering workshops, computer labs, biology/chemistry labs and healthcare simulation suites) and a five-story central library with quiet and group study spaces and extensive print and digital collections.
