Why Isik University

Isik University (Işık Üniversitesi) is a prominent private university in Istanbul, known for high-quality, English-taught education and a vibrant campus life. Founded in 1996, but backed by one of Turkey’s oldest educational foundations (1885), it blends a rich heritage with modern teaching across five faculties and two complementary campuses. The name Işık means “light,” reflecting an enlightening mission rooted in the Feyziye Schools Foundation’s long tradition. With globally recognized, MÜDEK-accredited engineering, English-medium programs, a multicultural community of 5,000+ students and competitive tuition, Isik is an appealing choice for international students at the crossroads of Europe and Asia.

History & milestones

Isik University was established in 1996 by the Feyziye Schools Foundation (Feyziye Mektepleri Vakfı), an institution with roots dating back to 1885 and a long tradition of “enlightening” young minds, the very meaning of Işık. Starting with a few core faculties and a modest student body, it opened its main campus in the serene coastal town of Şile and later developed a Maslak city campus to serve urban and professional programs. Through the late 1990s and 2000s it steadily broadened its undergraduate and graduate offerings, established modern laboratories and research centers, and embraced innovation in education, growing from humble beginnings into a comprehensive, contemporary university with more than 25 years of academic excellence.

Istanbul, two complementary campuses

Isik operates two campuses that give students the best of both worlds:

  • Şile Campus (main), an expansive, green campus on Istanbul’s Asian side along the Black Sea, about an hour from the city centre. Surrounded by lush greenery and fresh sea air, it offers a traditional collegiate atmosphere with dormitories, cafeterias, high-tech labs and design studios, sports facilities and plenty of open space, a calm, focused setting for study, yet well-connected for weekend trips into the city.
  • Maslak Campus (city), a modern, technologically advanced campus in one of Istanbul’s major business and financial districts on the European side, hosting many graduate, evening and executive programs. Close to corporate headquarters, tech parks and cultural centres, it puts students within reach of internships, career fairs and networking.

A shuttle connects the peaceful Şile retreat to the dynamic life of Istanbul.

Vision & mission

True to its name, Isik aspires to be a “Light University” that illuminates the future through knowledge, innovation and leadership, shining as a beacon of learning that guides students to success in a global society and earning recognition both in Turkey and on the world stage. Its student-focused, research-oriented mission rests on three pillars: academic excellence (up-to-date curricula taught by qualified faculty, with rigorous scholarship and innovation); a global perspective (English proficiency, intercultural competence and international programs that produce true global citizens); and personal growth and leadership (mentorship, extracurricular life and a culture of teamwork and community engagement). In short, Isik seeks to “enlighten” students with both expertise and values.

Rankings & recognition

Despite being relatively young, Isik places consistently among Turkey’s better universities. URAP 2022 ranked it 62nd in Turkey (~2,580th worldwide) for academic performance, Webometrics 2023 about 85th nationally (~3,090th globally) for web presence and impact, and uniRank 2023 roughly 63rd in Turkey for online popularity. These measures use different criteria, but its steady presence in the top ~100 Turkish universities and on international lists reflects an ongoing commitment to research, academic quality and global engagement, a standing the university works to improve each year.

Academics & language of instruction

Isik offers 30+ bachelor’s programs, around 20 master’s and several PhD programs, plus roughly 10 associate (2-year) programs through its vocational schools, across five faculties and dedicated graduate institutes. English is the primary medium of instruction for many programs, especially in engineering, business, international relations and graduate studies, while some are taught in Turkish; an English Preparatory School supports those who need it, and Turkish-language courses are available to all. Programs follow the American credit system and Bologna standards (around 240 ECTS for a bachelor’s), and double-major and minor options let high-performing students graduate with expertise in two fields. Fully accredited by YÖK, Isik degrees are recognized nationally and compatible with European higher education.

Faculties & specializations

  • Faculty of Engineering & Natural Sciences, a flagship, with Computer, Electrical-Electronics, Industrial, Mechanical and Civil Engineering plus Mathematics and Physics; MÜDEK-accredited, with modern labs, small lab sections, industry internships and research from AI to renewable energy.
  • Faculty of Economics & Administrative Sciences, Business Administration / International Business, Economics and International Relations, with case studies, company projects and an entrepreneurship focus, leveraging Istanbul’s business hub.
  • Faculty of Arts & Sciences, Psychology (a standout, with clinical, developmental and industrial tracks and internships), English Language & Literature and the humanities, providing much of the university’s broad-based education.
  • Faculty of Fine Arts, Design & Architecture, Architecture, Interior Architecture and Visual Communication Design, with a strong studio culture, design competitions, exhibitions and digital labs (3D printing, animation, multimedia).
  • Graduate Institutes (Sciences and Social Sciences) and Vocational Schools, coordinating master’s and PhD tracks (e.g. Engineering Management) and 2-year applied programs in technical and business fields.

Tuition & scholarships

Isik’s tuition is competitive for a private Istanbul university; fees are quoted in US dollars, and the figures below are approximate annual guidance, exact current fees appear in the tuition table above:

  • Associate (2-year) programs: roughly $1,800 / year
  • Bachelor’s programs: about $3,600-4,800 / year depending on field
  • Master’s programs: around $5,100-5,700 / year
  • PhD programs: about $11,400 / year (often substantially reduced by waivers or assistantships)

The university is generous with merit scholarships, high-achieving applicants can receive 25%, 50% or up to 100% tuition waivers, alongside region-specific international awards, sports and arts scholarships, sibling and early-payment discounts, and graduate assistantships that provide stipends or tuition remission. Government Türkiye Scholarships are accepted, and with Istanbul’s still-moderate cost of living, Isik offers excellent value.

Graduate studies

Graduate study is central to Isik’s research profile, coordinated through its Institutes of Sciences and Social Sciences and often based at the Maslak campus for working professionals. Popular master’s programs include the MBA (with practical consultancy projects and a startup incubator), M.Sc. in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, M.Sc. in Computer Engineering (AI, data science, cybersecurity), M.A. in International Relations (with diplomat guest lectures and consulate/NGO internships), and master’s in Industrial Engineering, Architecture, Psychology and Visual Communication Design, many with thesis or non-thesis tracks. PhD programs span Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical-Electronics Engineering, Management/Economics and the fundamental sciences (Mathematics, Physics). Graduate students benefit from close faculty mentorship, dedicated research labs, conference-travel support and a journal-rich library, and PhD candidates frequently serve as funded research or teaching assistants.

Campus & facilities

The Şile campus offers contemporary classrooms and lecture halls, high-tech engineering and science laboratories, art and design studios, and a central library with extensive print and digital collections and quiet study zones. Student life is well supported: comfortable, secure dormitories (single, double and triple rooms with study lounges, kitchens, laundry and 24/7 security), cafeterias and food courts with halal and international options, and ample sports and recreation, indoor gyms, basketball and tennis courts, football fields and walking paths, all in a serene seaside setting students consistently praise. Festivals, concerts and exhibitions keep the campus lively. The Maslak city campus adds smart classrooms, conference halls, computer labs, design ateliers and a library branch, with industry and networking on the doorstep, and a shuttle plus campus-wide Wi-Fi tie everything together.

Student services & campus life

Isik surrounds students with comprehensive support. An International Office assists with visas, residence permits and a welcoming orientation week, plus intercultural events, Istanbul city tours and peer mentorship that pairs newcomers with current students. On-campus health services (doctors/nurses, first aid, referrals and insurance guidance) and free, confidential counseling look after well-being, while a Disability Support Unit ensures accessibility. A Career Center runs CV and interview workshops, job fairs, company presentations and internship placement, backed by an active and growing alumni network. Beyond academics, dozens of student clubs, from the Engineering Society, IEEE chapter and Model UN to music, theatre, photography, robotics and an International Students Club, host events, competitions and trips, and a full slate of sports (intramural and intercollegiate) keeps campus life energetic.

Accreditations & recognition

Isik is fully accredited by Turkey’s Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and aligned with the Bologna Process and ECTS, so its degrees are recognized nationally and across the European Higher Education Area. Its engineering programs are accredited by MÜDEK, a signatory of the Washington Accord, meaning Isik engineering degrees are recognized internationally, including in the US and UK. The university is a member of the European University Association (EUA), an active Erasmus+ participant with numerous bilateral agreements across Europe (and partnerships in North America, Asia and the Middle East), and its faculties maintain professional ties to bodies such as IEEE and ACM. Backed by the prestige of the 1885 Feyziye Schools Foundation, an Isik degree carries credibility at home and abroad.

Special highlights & why choose

Isik’s appeal is its blend of an enlightening 1885 heritage with modern, globally aligned education. Its MÜDEK-accredited engineering faculty fields teams at TEKNOFEST and other competitions and pursues research in AI and renewable energy; its business faculty runs an entrepreneurship incubator and real-company consultancy projects; and its arts, design and architecture students win competitions and exhibit across Istanbul. Add a choice between a green seaside campus and a buzzing Maslak business-district campus, English-medium programs, generous merit scholarships up to 100%, Erasmus+ mobility and a strong support system, and Isik University is a well-rounded, welcoming and reputable choice for students who want a quality education at the crossroads of Europe and Asia.
