Why Istanbul Atlas University

Istanbul Atlas University is a modern private, non-profit (foundation) university on Istanbul’s European side, founded in 2018 and known especially for its strength in medicine and health sciences. With a state-of-the-art 110,000 m² “smart campus,” its own 400-bed teaching hospital, an on-campus dental center, and many programs taught in English, Atlas has grown to around 9,000 students drawn from Africa, Asia, the Middle East and beyond. Its motto, the “Butterfly Effect”, captures its belief that small steps in education can create big impacts in society, and it pairs that ethos with practical, clinically grounded training across five faculties.

History & milestones

Atlas University was established in 2018 under the Turkish Balkan Education, Culture and Health Foundation and, after two years of preparation, welcomed its first students in the 2020-21 academic year, when the Atlas Vadi Campus in Kağıthane opened as the hub for all academic activity. Early milestones came fast: the launch of its faculties of Medicine and Dentistry, each supported by a dedicated university hospital and dental center; the development of modern laboratories and research centers; and the formation of international partnerships through Erasmus+. In just a few years its student body grew to roughly 9,000, making Atlas one of Turkey’s fastest-rising young universities and a testament to its commitment to innovation.

Istanbul, the Kağıthane advantage

The Atlas Vadi Campus sits in Kağıthane, a growing commercial and residential district on the European side, near vibrant areas such as Şişli, Beşiktaş and Taksim. This central location gives students a safe, modern neighbourhood with malls, cafés, parks and excellent public-transport links, plus quick access to Istanbul’s cultural life and to the city’s many hospitals, companies and research centres for internships. Studying in Istanbul, a city bridging Europe and Asia, adds an unmatched cultural dimension and a welcoming international community, helping students from around the world quickly feel at home.

Vision & mission

Atlas’s vision is to be a leading, internationally recognized institution known for innovation in education, science and research, achieving global recognition through high-quality higher education and impactful scientific research. Its mission is to educate generations of creative, globally competent thinkers who can integrate into both local and international job markets while upholding universal values and respect for cultural diversity, producing and disseminating accurate, useful knowledge for the benefit of society through modern, student-centred teaching and active research. Across everything runs the “Butterfly Effect” idea: that the education and growth students achieve here will go on to make positive change in the world.

Rankings & recognition

As a university founded only in 2018, Atlas is not yet in older, research-heavy tables like QS or THE, but it is climbing steadily. Webometrics 2023 ranks it 136th in Turkey (~6,302nd globally) for web presence and research output, and uniRank 2023 lists it 204th nationally. It performs notably in sustainability: the UI GreenMetric 2024 places it around 2,024th globally (and it has been reported ~15th among Turkish foundation universities in a sustainability-focused ranking) for its green campus initiatives. It is also beginning to register in the SCImago and AD Scientific Index rankings as its faculty’s research output in medical and health sciences grows, clear signs of an upward trajectory.

Academics & language of instruction

Atlas offers around 33 programs, about 11 associate, 22 bachelor’s and a growing set of master’s and PhD programs, across five faculties (Medicine, Dentistry, Engineering & Natural Sciences, Health Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences), a Vocational School and an Institute of Graduate Studies. Many programs run in English, including Medicine, Dentistry, Software and Industrial Engineering, Business and Psychology, while others (Midwifery, Nutrition, Physiotherapy and some design fields) are in Turkish; an English Preparatory School and Turkish (TÖMER) classes support students who need them. With around 200 faculty and a low student-to-faculty ratio, students receive personalised attention and a strong emphasis on practical, hands-on training.

Faculties & specializations

  • Faculty of Medicine, a 6-year MD (English and Turkish) with clinical training directly in the university’s own 400-bed teaching hospital, plus small-group, problem-based learning and high-fidelity simulation.
  • Faculty of Dentistry, a 5-year DDS (English and Turkish) with an on-campus Dentistry Application & Research Center, phantom/simulation labs and supervised patient clinics.
  • Faculty of Engineering & Natural Sciences, Software Engineering (English), Industrial Engineering (English), Computer Engineering, Molecular Biology & Genetics (English) and Interior Architecture & Environmental Design.
  • Faculty of Health Sciences, Nursing (English and Turkish), Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation, Nutrition & Dietetics, Midwifery and Language & Speech Therapy, with clinical-skills and simulation labs.
  • Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences, Business Administration (English), Psychology (English and Turkish), English Language & Literature and Translation & Interpreting.

Tuition & scholarships

Atlas’s tuition is competitive for a private health-focused university; fees are quoted in US dollars, and the figures below are approximate annual guidance, exact current fees appear in the tuition table above:

  • Associate (2-year) programs: roughly $2,610 / year
  • Bachelor’s programs: about $3,375-5,500 / year for most fields (e.g. Software Engineering ~$5,670, Nursing ~$5,100, Business ~$4,950)
  • Medicine & Dentistry: premium programs, Medicine ~$22,500 / year (English), Dentistry ~$21,000 (English) or ~$16,500 (Turkish)
  • Master’s: ~$4,050-13,500 / year depending on field and language
  • PhD: about $14,850 / year (e.g. Psychology, Nursing/Health Sciences)

The university offers a range of discounts and scholarships: a 5% cash-payment discount for paying the year upfront, a sibling discount, academic-merit scholarships, a 10% award for vocational-high-school graduates continuing in related fields, disability scholarships of up to 60%, and sports/arts awards, plus acceptance of government Türkiye Scholarships. Language prep fees typically match the program’s tuition, with incentives (e.g. a credit toward the next year) for Turkish prep.

Graduate studies

Atlas’s Institute of Graduate Studies offers a growing roster of master’s and doctoral programs, with both thesis (research) and non-thesis (professional) tracks. Master’s options cluster around the university’s health and science strengths, Speech & Language Therapy, Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation, Nutrition & Dietetics, Midwifery, Molecular Biology & Genetics and Psychology, with business and engineering programs developing. PhD programs centre on Psychology and Nursing/Health Sciences (e.g. Surgical Diseases Nursing), with more planned. Graduate students benefit from the university’s modern labs, the teaching hospital, international research databases, close faculty mentorship and opportunities to join funded projects (including TÜBİTAK-supported work), present at international conferences, and take Erasmus+ research exchanges, with assistantships, tuition waivers and conference-travel grants available.

Campus & facilities

The 110,000 m² Atlas Vadi Campus integrates everything in one place. Five faculty buildings sit alongside the Atlas University teaching hospital (400+ beds, 18 operating rooms) and dental clinics, 19+ specialized laboratories (medical, engineering and science), and a large 2,500 m² central library with quiet study areas, group rooms and around 600 individual study cubicles with multimedia support. For balance, students enjoy a 1,000 m² indoor sports hall and fitness centre, multiple dining halls and cafés, outdoor recreation areas, dormitory accommodation, smart classrooms, modern computer and simulation labs and campus-wide high-speed Wi-Fi. Because every faculty and service shares one purpose-built, sustainability-conscious “smart campus,” students from different disciplines interact daily and faculty are easily accessible.

Student services & campus life

Atlas surrounds students with comprehensive support. An International Student Office handles pre-arrival paperwork, visa letters, orientation, residence permits and a “buddy” integration program, while the university helps arrange safe dormitory or partner-residence housing. A campus medical center, with easy access to the affiliated hospital, looks after health, and a Counseling Center offers confidential support and workshops on stress, study skills and cultural adjustment. A Career Development Center provides CV and interview help, career fairs and internship placement, leveraging Istanbul’s hospitals and companies, and a strong framework supports students with special needs (accessible facilities, adapted materials and disability scholarships). Campus life is lively with 33+ student clubs, theatre, music, robotics, medicine, travel, sports and volunteering, plus a Club Day, festivals and tournaments.

Accreditations & recognition

Atlas is fully accredited by Turkey’s Council of Higher Education (YÖK), so its diplomas are recognized across Turkey and many other countries. It participates in the European Higher Education Area via the Bologna Process, uses ECTS and issues Diploma Supplements for international compatibility, and holds an Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) for student and staff exchange. Its degrees are recognized across the MENA region, including Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Sudan, Lebanon, Palestine and Morocco, and it has earned a quality-assurance accreditation and is pursuing program-level marks (e.g. WFME-aligned medical accreditation, EUR-ACE-style engineering standards). With its recognized green campus and growing research footprint, an Atlas degree is credible and portable.

Special highlights & why choose

Atlas’s defining strength is clinically grounded health education: its own 400-bed teaching hospital and dental center put students in real clinical settings from early in their studies, classrooms an elevator ride from operating theatres, with English-medium Medicine and Dentistry that open international careers. Beyond health, Software and Industrial Engineering integrate real projects, hackathons and Istanbul’s startup scene, and English-medium Business Administration offers internships, CEO seminars and entrepreneurship support in Turkey’s commercial capital. Add a modern, green 110,000 m² smart campus, a 2,500 m² library, 33+ clubs, generous discounts and disability scholarships, Erasmus+ mobility and MENA-wide recognition, and Istanbul Atlas University is a compelling, fast-rising choice, especially for students aiming at medicine, dentistry and the health sciences in the heart of Istanbul.
