Why Istanbul Bilgi University

Istanbul Bilgi University (BİLGİ) is a leading private university in Istanbul, known for innovative, liberal education and a vibrant campus life. Founded in 1996, it has built a strong reputation for academic excellence, modern facilities and global accreditation, guided by its motto, “Non scholae, sed vitae discimus” (“Learning not for school but for life”). With 150+ programs in English and Turkish across four Istanbul campuses, a multicultural community of around 20,000 students from 90+ countries, the distinction of being the only WASC-accredited university in Turkey, and a strategic alliance with Arizona State University, BİLGİ offers a world-recognized degree and a genuinely international experience bridging Europe and Asia.

History & milestones

BİLGİ was established on 7 June 1996 by the Bilgi Education and Culture Foundation as one of the first foundation (private) universities in Turkey, positioning itself from the start as a progressive institution focused on practical, lifelong learning and academic freedom. Key milestones include opening the landmark SantralIstanbul campus in 2007 on the site of a historic power plant, transforming it into a modern education-and-arts complex, and the Asian-side Kozyatağı campus in 2015. BİLGİ was part of the global Laureate International Universities network from 2006 to 2019, which broadened its reach and resources, and in 2020 it formed a strategic collaboration with Arizona State University (ASU) through the Cintana Alliance, further internationalising its curriculum and partnership opportunities. After more than two decades, it remains a dynamic institution blending tradition with innovation.

Istanbul, four campuses

BİLGİ operates four campuses across Istanbul, all centrally located or easily accessible:

  • SantralIstanbul (flagship), a green riverside campus by the Golden Horn in Eyüpsultan, built on a former power plant, with modern classrooms and labs, an Energy Museum, art galleries and lively social spaces, a hub for cultural and academic events.
  • Dolapdere, a modern, award-winning campus near Taksim in central Istanbul, home to faculties such as communication and applied sciences, a library and recreational facilities including a gym and swimming pool.
  • Kuştepe, the original campus in the Şişli business district, housing the English Preparatory School and various undergraduate programs in a close-knit setting near Istanbul’s business and media hubs.
  • Kozyatağı, a smaller Asian-side campus (Kadıköy/Ataşehir) for graduate and professional programs like the MBA, in the heart of the Asian-side business district.

Free shuttle buses connect the campuses, and all are equipped with libraries, computer labs, cafeterias and 24/7 security, putting internships, media and industry right at students’ doorsteps.

Vision & mission

BİLGİ’s vision is to be an internationally leading university that expands the boundaries of science and art, embraces freedom of thought and contributes to society’s progress. Its mission centres on educating individuals to international standards with strong research and problem-solving skills, social responsibility and a spirit of innovation. The university prizes academic freedom, interdisciplinary learning and diversity, meaning students learn in a genuinely student-centred, liberal environment that encourages critical thinking, creativity and real-world engagement. “Learning not for school but for life” is not just a slogan but is woven through its curricula and campus culture.

Rankings & recognition

BİLGİ features consistently in major global rankings and is one of Turkey’s top-ranked foundation universities. It sits in the 1201-1400 band of the QS World University Rankings (2024), the 1501+ band of Times Higher Education (2025), and at #796 globally in U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities (2024), with a regional placement of #211-220 in the QS Emerging Europe & Central Asia (EECA, 2022) rankings. Its presence across QS, THE and U.S. News underscores the quality of its education and research, while its regional standing marks it as a leader in its part of the world, a reputation reinforced by its uniquely strong international accreditation profile.

Academics & language of instruction

BİLGİ offers 150+ programs, associate, bachelor’s, master’s and PhD, across 8 faculties and 3 vocational schools. Many bachelor’s and master’s programs are taught in English (e.g. International Business, Computer Engineering, International Relations, Psychology), with others in Turkish (e.g. Law, Nursing) and an English Preparatory Year for students who need to strengthen their language first. Interdisciplinary options like double majors and minors let students tailor their education to their goals, and a favourable ~17:1 student-to-faculty ratio (with 1,000+ academics) enables interactive classes and personal mentoring. The curriculum follows the European ECTS system, and exchange programs and summer schools add study-abroad opportunities.

Faculties & specializations

  • Faculty of Business, Business Administration, International Trade and Economics, with a strong entrepreneurship and innovation focus.
  • Faculty of Engineering & Natural Sciences, Computer and Electrical Engineering and Genetics & Bioengineering, with hands-on project teams (BİLGİ teams have built electric cars and solar-powered boats for national competitions).
  • Faculty of Communication, Media & Communication, Visual Communication Design, Advertising and Film & TV, near Taksim, with award-winning student work in film and design festivals.
  • Faculty of Architecture, Architecture, Interior Design and Industrial Design.
  • Faculty of Law, an LL.B. that pioneered human-rights legal education in Turkey, with a human-rights centre, legal clinics and moot-court competitions.
  • Faculties of Social Sciences & Humanities, Applied Sciences and Health Sciences, Psychology, International Relations, Sociology and History; Aviation Management, Logistics, Sports Management and Culinary Arts; and Nursing, Nutrition & Dietetics, Physiotherapy and Child Development.

Tuition & scholarships

BİLGİ’s tuition is competitive for its internationally accredited quality; fees are quoted in US dollars, and the figures below are approximate annual guidance, exact current fees appear in the tuition table above:

  • Associate (2-year) programs: roughly $2,000-3,500 / year
  • Bachelor’s programs: about $4,800-8,000 / year for most fields, rising to around $15,000 / year for Law
  • English Preparatory Year: approximately $12,000 (only if required)
  • Master’s programs: roughly $9,000-15,000 for the program, depending on field and format
  • PhD programs: about $18,000 / year

The university offers merit and international scholarships, a 10% sibling discount, graduate assistantships for high-achievers and BİLGİ alumni, and acceptance of government Türkiye Scholarships, competitive value compared with similarly accredited universities in Europe or North America. Istanbul’s relatively moderate cost of living keeps the overall budget manageable.

Graduate studies

BİLGİ’s graduate programs are designed to produce skilled professionals and researchers. Master’s options span an MBA (for business acceleration and entrepreneurship), an LL.M. (with specialisations such as human rights or tax law), and M.A./M.Sc. degrees in International Relations, Data Science, Finance, Marketing, Engineering Management and Clinical Psychology, many offered in the evenings or weekends to accommodate working students, with thesis or non-thesis tracks. PhD programs are available in fields including Business Administration, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Political Science & International Relations and Communication, requiring around 3-4 years of original research. Graduate classes emphasise case studies, real-world problem-solving and close interaction with industry and academic mentors, and the ASU/Cintana collaboration can open joint research opportunities and a broader academic network, with research/teaching assistantships and project grants supporting many doctoral candidates.

Campus & facilities

BİLGİ’s campuses are modern and culture-rich. They include three campus libraries with extensive print and digital collections, quiet and group study spaces and computer access (open late during exams); engineering and science labs; professional media studios and art galleries (notably at SantralIstanbul); and a gym and swimming pool at Dolapdere. Student life is supported by 100+ student clubs and numerous sports teams, the BİLGİ Talent career center, a counseling center, dedicated accessibility support (ramps, lifts, exam accommodations, assistive technology), and multiple cafeterias and coffee shops serving halal and vegetarian options. Housing assistance, an international student office and free inter-campus shuttles complete a well-supported, well-connected university experience.

Student services & campus life

BİLGİ surrounds students with comprehensive support. An International Student Office guides foreign students from admission through graduation, orientation, residence permits and cultural-integration events, while housing assistance connects students with partner dormitories and residences near campus. On-campus medical units handle first aid and health advice, and a Psychological Counseling Center offers free, confidential support for personal, academic and adjustment issues. The BİLGİ Talent career center runs CV and interview workshops, career counseling and job fairs, with many companies recruiting BİLGİ students for internships and jobs through campus events. With 100+ clubs, from Robotics and Debate to Music and sports teams, festivals and a buzzing cultural calendar across four campuses, campus life is rich, diverse and genuinely international.

Accreditations & recognition

BİLGİ’s hallmark is its international accreditation: it is the only university in Turkey accredited by the American WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), certifying that its education meets rigorous U.S. standards. Beyond Turkey’s YÖK (with regular YÖKAK quality audits), its engineering programs are MÜDEK-accredited to the European EUR-ACE standard, and its English Preparatory School holds CEA (USA) accreditation. It is a member of the European University Association (EUA), a signatory of the Magna Charta Universitatum, and an active Erasmus+ participant, and its strategic alliance with Arizona State University (Cintana Alliance) strengthens its global standing. The result is a degree recognised across Europe, the United States, the Middle East, Asia and beyond, respected by employers and graduate schools worldwide.

Special highlights & why choose

BİLGİ’s appeal is its rare combination of global accreditation, a liberal ethos and a uniquely creative campus culture. It is the only WASC-accredited university in Turkey and partners with Arizona State University; it is a pioneer of human-rights legal education; its communication, design and film programs produce award-winning, festival-recognised work; its engineering students build electric cars and solar boats; and its strong entrepreneurship ecosystem, incubation programs, startup days and innovation competitions, supports future founders. Add a one-of-a-kind power-plant flagship campus with an Energy Museum and art galleries, English-medium programs, a diverse community from 90+ countries, Erasmus+ mobility and a central Istanbul location, and Istanbul Bilgi University stands out as one of Turkey’s most internationally connected, forward-looking choices, true to its promise to “learn for life.”
