At a glance
Why Istanbul Esenyurt University
Istanbul Esenyurt University (IESU) is a young, dynamic private university in Istanbul, known for its affordable tuition and modern, student-centered approach. Established in 2013, it has quickly built a reputation for quality teaching, practical learning and strong support for international students, who, with 1,600+ students from 50+ countries, make up a remarkably large share of its 3,000-4,000-strong community. With diverse, industry-relevant programs across four faculties, a low student-to-faculty ratio, and a welcoming, close-knit campus in one of Istanbul’s fastest-growing districts, IESU is an attractive choice for students who want a friendly, accessible institution with a genuinely global outlook.
History & milestones
IESU was officially founded in 2013 by the Yeşilköy 2001 Education, Culture and Health Foundation, with its charter published in the Official Gazette on 18 June 2013. It began its first academic year (Fall 2013-14) with just 296 students, 136 undergraduates and 160 vocational students, across 6 undergraduate departments and 8 two-year programs. From that small but ambitious start it organised into four faculties (Engineering & Architecture, Health Sciences, Business & Management Sciences, and Arts & Social Sciences), plus schools of Applied Sciences and Physical Education & Sports, vocational schools, and graduate institutes in Social Sciences, Health Sciences and Science & Technology. Over the following years it launched market-driven programs (Nursing, Nutrition & Dietetics, engineering fields), forged international collaborations and grew steadily into a recognised institution serving thousands of students.
Istanbul, the Esenyurt advantage
IESU’s compact, modern main campus sits in the Esenyurt district on Istanbul’s European side (Zafer Mah., Adile Naşit Blv. No:1), one of the city’s fastest-developing areas, with affordable living, shops, cafés and student housing right nearby. It is well-connected by metro, metrobüs and bus, and the university runs a free shuttle from the Avcılar metrobus station to campus, making daily commutes effortless. Studying in Istanbul, a transcontinental metropolis bridging Europe and Asia, gives students the city’s cultural richness, historic heritage (from the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia to modern museums) and dynamic life, while the focused, close-knit campus provides a supportive home base.
Vision & mission
IESU aspires to be a leading university nationally and internationally, distinguished by equality, innovation and interdisciplinary education, valuing traditional culture and diversity while fostering modern intellectual growth, and serving both the country and the global scientific community. Its mission is to raise well-rounded individuals who contribute to society’s scientific, technological and cultural development and uphold the values of the Turkish Republic. Its educational philosophy rests on quality education and continuous improvement, equal opportunity and diversity, interdisciplinary and practical learning (with emphasis on technology, research and entrepreneurship), and a student-centred, ethical culture of mentorship, transparency, teamwork and environmental awareness.
Rankings & recognition
As a young, teaching-focused institution, IESU is categorised as a “small-sized” university and is still building its research profile, but it has begun to appear in international rankings. EduRank 2025 places it around 153rd in Turkey (~8,872nd globally), Webometrics 2024 about 160th nationally (~8,986th worldwide), and uniRank 2025 roughly 162nd in Turkey (~7,302nd globally). These positions, generally around 150th-160th nationally, reflect its newness and teaching orientation rather than research scale; its real strengths in quality teaching, modern facilities and student satisfaction are not fully captured by research-weighted rankings. As it expands its programs and faculty research, its standing is expected to rise.
Academics & language of instruction
IESU offers a wide range of programs across its four faculties, two schools and graduate institutes, 24 undergraduate departments plus dozens of associate programs, around 25 master’s and a couple of doctoral programs, covering most major fields except medicine and dentistry. Most undergraduate programs are taught in Turkish, but several are offered in English, including Business Administration, Political Science & International Relations, Economics & Finance and Software Engineering, making the university accessible to students who don’t yet speak Turkish. An English preparatory program (and Turkish-language support) is available for those who need it. The curriculum follows the Bologna Process with ECTS credits, so degrees are internationally recognised and credits transferable, and learning emphasises hands-on, real-world skills through projects, labs and internships.

- Associate (2-year) programs: roughly $1,650 / year
- Bachelor’s programs: about $2,200-3,500 / year (Turkish-medium fields nearer $2,200-2,500; English-medium such as Software Engineering up to ~$3,500)
- Master’s programs: ~$2,400-9,250 for the program depending on field and track (e.g. an English MBA higher, Clinical Psychology at the top end)
- PhD programs: about $5,750 / year (e.g. Civil Engineering)
A key strength is access: all international students receive a 50% tuition scholarship by default (already reflected above), with academic-merit scholarships for high achievers, a preference scholarship of up to 50% for students who list IESU as a top choice, sports scholarships, 10% sibling/spouse discounts, and a 50% discount for IESU associate graduates continuing to a bachelor’s. Government Türkiye Scholarships are accepted, and Esenyurt’s low cost of living keeps the overall budget very manageable.
Graduate studies
IESU’s graduate institutes offer around 25 master’s programs (with thesis and non-thesis tracks) and a couple of PhD programs. Master’s options span an English MBA (strategy, finance, marketing and leadership, often with evening/weekend classes), M.Sc. in Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management (leveraging Istanbul’s role as a trade hub), M.A. in Clinical Psychology, Health Institutions Management, Occupational Health & Safety, Finance and more, with emerging tech offerings such as data science. Doctoral programs include PhD in Civil Engineering (with relevance to earthquake-resistant design) and PhD in Business Administration. Graduate students benefit from small classes, close faculty mentorship, the campus’s 28 labs and research centres, academic-writing and thesis workshops, and Erasmus+ research mobility, with assistantships and tuition support available for strong candidates.
Campus & facilities
IESU’s modern campus is purpose-built for hands-on learning. It houses 16 classrooms, a large conference hall, and specialised facilities including a Nutrition & Dietetics lab, a computer and CAD/CAM lab, an anatomy & physiotherapy lab and architecture drawing studios, with 28 laboratories and research centres in total. A central library offers curated print collections, online databases, e-books, computer terminals and study spaces (with extended exam-period hours), and a large cafeteria seats ~400 and serves up to ~1,500 affordable meals a day. Students also have indoor sports and fitness options (basketball, volleyball, mini-football), campus-wide Wi-Fi and smart classrooms, and a step-free, accessible environment with ramps and lifts. Despite its compact size, 40+ student clubs and a busy calendar of seminars, workshops and a Spring Festival keep campus life vibrant.
Student services & campus life
IESU pairs its campus with attentive support. With no university-run dorms, it partners with vetted private dormitories nearby and helps international students find safe, budget-friendly housing through its International Office and Student Affairs, which also handle visas, residence permits, orientation, Turkish-language support and cultural trips, with peer-mentor programs to ease the transition. A Career Center runs career fairs, CV and interview workshops and on-campus recruitment, while a Psychological Counseling & Guidance Center offers confidential support and workshops on stress and cultural adjustment. An on-campus medical clinic, guidance on mandatory health insurance, and a disability-support framework (accessible facilities, exam accommodations, alternative-format materials) round out student care. With 40+ clubs spanning culture, academics, sports and an International Students Club, plus a Club Fest and Spring Festival, IESU’s diverse, friendly community helps students from around the world feel at home.
Accreditations & recognition
IESU is fully accredited by Turkey’s Council of Higher Education (YÖK), so its degrees are legitimate for employment and further study at home and abroad. As Turkey is part of the Bologna Process, IESU uses ECTS credits and issues compatible qualifications, making its diplomas recognised across the European Higher Education Area and credits transferable for exchange or further study. It actively participates in Erasmus+, Mevlana and Farabi exchange schemes, enabling semesters at partner universities in Europe and beyond, and engages with international academic networks (including ties to the EUA). Its degrees are recognised by education ministries in numerous countries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, giving graduates genuinely portable qualifications.
Special highlights & why choose
IESU’s appeal is its blend of affordability, a genuinely international community and practical, employability-focused programs. Its English Software Engineering and other engineering programs emphasise real projects, Teknofest/IEEE competitions and internships in Istanbul’s industrial zones; its English Business Administration and MBA draw on the city as a living business laboratory; and its Health Sciences programs (Nursing, Physiotherapy, Nutrition) deliver simulation training and hospital placements in fields of worldwide demand. Add distinctive Sports Management and Coaching programs, a campus built for hands-on learning, an automatic 50% scholarship with generous additional awards, Erasmus+/Mevlana/Farabi mobility, 40+ clubs and a warm, supportive culture, and Istanbul Esenyurt University is a strong, accessible choice for international students who want a quality, globally recognised education in Istanbul without a heavy financial burden.

Campus
What students say
The library and study spaces stay open late, which saved me during exam weeks. Everything on campus feels modern and well kept.
The professors in School of Physical Education actually know their students by name. Classes are hands-on and the labs were better equipped than I expected.
What I like most is the balance: Engineering classes are taken seriously, but festivals, sports and clubs keep university life fun.
