Why Istanbul Galata University

Istanbul Galata University (IGU) is a young, dynamic private university in the historic heart of Istanbul. Established in 2019 with its first intake in 2020, it has quickly built a reputation for innovation and cultural diversity. Named after the iconic Galata district, beside the Galata Tower and the Golden Horn, it embodies the spirit of a city that bridges Europe and Asia. Across five faculties and a vocational school, around 2,400 students study modern programs in English and Turkish at moderate tuition, with strengths in dentistry and the health sciences and a genuinely welcoming environment for international students who want to study in Istanbul’s cultural centre.

History & milestones

IGU was founded by the Bulut Education Foundation with a vision to invest in Turkey’s human capital. Its establishment was approved by law in mid-2019, and it opened to students in 2020, making it one of Turkey’s newest universities, born in an era of rapid educational innovation. Despite its youth, it has set up multiple faculties, launched international exchange programs and attracted a diverse student body, while developing its own Dental Hospital as a clinical-training centrepiece. Fittingly, one of its main campus buildings carries a 140+-year history, once serving the banking sector and later a hotel before becoming part of the university, symbolising IGU’s distinctive blend of historic roots and a forward-looking mission.

Istanbul, the Galata advantage

IGU’s main campus sits in Beyoğlu, in the Galata neighbourhood near the famous Galata Tower and the shore of the Golden Horn. It is one of Istanbul’s most vibrant central districts, full of historic architecture, museums, galleries, cafés, bookshops and theatres, and just a short walk from Taksim Square and İstiklal Avenue. For students, this means easy public transport, nearby internships at city companies, and an everyday immersion in a cosmopolitan area that has welcomed many cultures for centuries. It is truly the best of both worlds: a close-knit, safe campus community within one of the world’s most exciting cities, where academic learning and cultural experience go hand in hand.

Vision & mission

IGU’s mission is to provide a modern, high-quality education that nurtures well-rounded, confident and socially responsible individuals, investing in each student’s personal development and happiness, guided by the founders’ belief that “nothing makes sense if you do not have well-trained and happy human resources.” Its vision is to be a cultural bridge and an innovator in education: embracing multiculturalism like the Galata district itself, connecting heritage with the future, keeping curricula aligned with universal values and global standards, and prioritising employability and real-world skills so graduates are job-ready, creative and entrepreneurial, ready to lead positive change in their communities.

Rankings & recognition

For so young an institution, IGU has made an encouraging start in the rankings, placed around 71st in Turkey and roughly #3,567 globally in recent data, a respectable position among Turkish universities (in the national top ~75) within just a few years. Being in the mid-3,000s worldwide reflects its growing academic output and reputation, and the upward trajectory is promising: as the university expands its faculties, research and international collaborations, its standing is expected to rise further. For prospective students, this means joining a university clearly on the way up.

Academics & language of instruction

IGU offers 16 bachelor’s and 7 associate programs, plus master’s and (planned) PhD programs through its Institute of Graduate Education, across five faculties and a vocational school. Courses are taught in English or Turkish: English-medium options include Dentistry, Business Administration, Psychology and Interior Architecture, while many programs are in Turkish. International students entering English programs demonstrate proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS or the university’s test) or take an English Preparatory Year, and those in Turkish programs can prepare through the TÖMER language centre. The curriculum follows the Bologna/ECTS framework, emphasises practical, hands-on learning and industry links, and supports double majors and minors across faculties.

Faculties & specializations

  • Faculty of Dentistry, the university’s pride: a clinically intensive program where, from the later years, students treat patients under supervision at the university’s own İGAÜ Dental Hospital, with exposure to orthodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics, paediatric dentistry and endodontics.
  • Faculty of Health Sciences, Nursing, Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation and Nutrition & Dietetics, with simulation labs, clinical internships and (in pursuit) CAAHEP-aligned standards.
  • Faculty of Engineering, emerging Computer Engineering, Management Information Systems and related fields, with small classes, project-based learning and curricula aligned to ABET standards.
  • Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, Psychology, International Relations, Business Administration, Public Relations & Advertising, Communication & Design, Interior Architecture and Turkish Language & Literature.
  • Faculty of Sport Sciences, Coaching Training and sport sciences, with ties to Istanbul’s major sports clubs and facilities.
  • Vocational School, 2-year programs in Culinary Arts, Pharmacy Services, Emergency & First Aid, Anesthesia, Medical Imaging, Physiotherapy and Oral & Dental Health.

Tuition & scholarships

IGU’s tuition is moderate for central Istanbul; fees are quoted in US dollars, and the figures below are approximate annual guidance, exact current fees appear in the tuition table above:

  • Associate (2-year) programs: roughly $1,850 / year (Turkish-taught)
  • Bachelor’s programs: about $2,800 / year for most Turkish-taught fields, ~$3,350-5,000 / year for English programs such as Psychology, Interior Architecture and Business Administration
  • Dentistry (English, 5-year): approximately $12,500 / year, reflecting its intensive clinical resources

The university offers academic-merit scholarships, international student awards for select countries, sibling discounts, and early-registration or promotional scholarships of up to 25-50% for strong applicants, and accepts government Türkiye Scholarships. Combined with Istanbul’s student-friendly amenities, this keeps a quality, centrally located education genuinely attainable.

Graduate studies

IGU’s Institute of Graduate Education coordinates its growing postgraduate offering, with master’s programs aligned to the university’s strengths, an English MBA (strategic management, international business, finance and marketing, in thesis and non-thesis tracks), master’s in Nursing/Health Sciences, advanced Dental Sciences specialisations tied to the Dental Hospital, and International Relations / social sciences, and PhD ambitions in health, social sciences and (as the engineering faculty matures) technology. Graduate students benefit from the university’s research centres (oral & dental health, distance education), online journals and databases, and opportunities to publish, present at conferences and assist in teaching. As a research-active culture takes shape, the postgraduate environment is designed to support both career advancement and academic pathways.

Campus & facilities

IGU’s Galata Campus in Tepebaşı (blocks A-D around Meşrutiyet Caddesi) blends classical architecture with renovated, technology-equipped interiors, smart classrooms, computer and science labs, studios, a central library (with online databases, e-books, study halls and group rooms) and student lounges, all with the city’s amenities at the doorstep. Its dedicated Dental Hospital campus is effectively a teaching hospital, with modern clinics, simulation labs, X-ray imaging centres and research labs where dentistry students train on real patients, while a Piyalepaşa site provides additional space. Despite the urban setting, the university fosters a lively campus life with spaces for clubs and events, sports partnerships with local facilities, cafeterias and an inter-campus shuttle linking the sites.

Student services & campus life

IGU surrounds students with attentive support. It provides university-managed and affiliated housing (furnished, with internet, study areas and common spaces) and helps those who prefer off-campus living, while an International Office handles applications, visas, residence permits, orientation, Turkish-language courses and cultural trips. A campus health clinic (with the perk of discounted check-ups at the Dental Hospital), a Psychological Counseling Unit, and an Accessibility/Disabled Students Unit look after well-being and inclusion. A Career Center offers CV and interview workshops, career fairs, employer networking and internship placement in Istanbul’s commercial hub. Student clubs and societies (sports, arts, technology, international and cultural groups), intramural sports, festivals and the inspiration of studying among Beyoğlu’s galleries and museums make for a rich, multicultural campus life.

Accreditations & recognition

IGU is fully accredited by Turkey’s Council of Higher Education (YÖK), so its degrees meet national standards and are recognised across Turkey and, through equivalency, many other countries. It follows the Bologna/ECTS framework and participates in Erasmus+, Mevlana and Farabi exchange programs, enabling semesters at partner universities in Europe and beyond, and aligns its engineering programs with ABET and its health programs with CAAHEP international standards, while benchmarking quality processes against bodies such as CHEA. Its degrees are recognised by education authorities across the MENA region (Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Lebanon, Yemen, Syria and others), giving international graduates reassuring portability for work or further study.

Special highlights & why choose

IGU’s standout strength is clinically grounded health and dental education: its Faculty of Dentistry with an own Dental Hospital lets students treat real patients under supervision, a rare advantage, complemented by Nursing, Physiotherapy and Nutrition with strong practical training. Add an emerging Engineering faculty pursuing ABET accreditation with small, project-based classes; English-medium Business programs that use Istanbul as a living commercial laboratory; Sport Sciences with ties to the city’s famous clubs; and arts and design programs inspired by Beyoğlu’s galleries and museums. Wrapped in a 140-year heritage campus in the heart of Galata, with English-or-Turkish study, Erasmus+/Mevlana/Farabi mobility, MENA-wide recognition, moderate tuition and generous scholarships, Istanbul Galata University is a distinctive, fast-rising and welcoming choice for international students seeking a personal, practical education in one of the world’s great cities.
