Why Istanbul Medipol University
Istanbul Medipol University is a prominent private foundation university in Istanbul, known for its modern, research-driven approach and a powerful emphasis on health sciences. Established in 2009, it has grown remarkably fast into one of Turkey’s largest and most international universities, with around 45,000-50,000 students across 12 faculties, including 12,000+ internationals from 140+ countries, taught by some 1,400+ academic staff. Its defining strength is its integration with the vast Medipol Mega University Hospital complex, giving students, especially in medicine and health, unmatched hands-on clinical training in a JCI-accredited, world-ranked institution.
History & milestones
Medipol was founded on 7 July 2009 by the Medipolitan Education and Health Foundation (now the Turkey Education, Health and Research Foundation), with a vision of a modern research university centred on medical education; teaching began in 2010. Milestones followed quickly: the Medipol Mega Hospital complex opened in 2012; the Faculty of Law joined the European Law Faculties Association (ELFA) in 2015; the university earned a 5-year institutional accreditation from Turkey’s higher-education quality council (YÖKAK) around 2020; and in 2023 it joined the UN Academic Impact (UNAI) initiative. In just over a decade and a half it expanded far beyond medicine, into engineering, pharmacy, dentistry, law, business, communication and the arts, growing to nearly 50,000 students and becoming one of Turkey’s most preferred universities for local and international students alike.
Istanbul, campuses and a Mega Hospital
Medipol’s main campuses are the adjacent Kavacık North and South campuses in the Beykoz area on the Asian side, near the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, a green, self-contained academic village with dormitories, sports facilities, libraries and social spaces, a short drive from central Istanbul (South houses Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Law, Business and the arts; North houses Engineering & Natural Sciences, the main vocational school, the Language School and the student health and counseling centres). Its Haliç (Golden Horn) Campus on the historic peninsula houses the College of Health Sciences and health vocational programs. Most distinctively, the Medipol Mega University Hospital in Bağcılar, comprising four specialised hospitals (General Medicine, Oncology, Cardiovascular Surgery and Dentistry) with 810 beds, robotic surgery and research labs, serves as a teaching and research hospital where health students do clinical rotations and internships in a JCI-accredited Academic Medical Center, with university shuttles linking it to the campuses.
Vision & mission
Medipol’s vision is “to become a leading university globally and to provide scientific results that contribute to social development”, to be recognised worldwide for pioneering research and innovation that benefit society. Its mission is “to graduate students who can produce new technologies and science, respond to social demands, and take responsibility for the development of society”, a practice-oriented education where students apply knowledge in real-world contexts. Its core values, innovation, ethical integrity, tolerance, collaboration and excellence, and an emphasis on advanced technologies and a dynamic, research-led environment ensure graduates are both skilled professionals and conscientious global citizens.
Rankings & recognition
Medipol is climbing steadily in the rankings, with particular strength in health sciences. U.S. News & World Report ranks it #786 globally in Clinical Medicine (2024) and around #1,886 overall, the QS EECA regional table places it #351-400 (2024), the Round University Ranking #808 globally (2024), and Times Higher Education in the 1501+ band (with a top-401 placement among universities under 50 years old). Nationally, URAP has ranked it around 65th in Turkey and among the top dozen foundation universities. These results, especially in clinical medicine, reflect Medipol’s strong research output and rapid development, meaning students earn a degree from an increasingly recognised institution at home and abroad.
Academics & language of instruction
Medipol offers programs at every level, about 74 bachelor’s, 60+ master’s, 40+ doctoral and 50+ associate programs across 12 faculties, 4 vocational schools and 5 graduate institutes. Flagship English-medium health programs (the International School of Medicine, plus Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing and allied health) sit alongside engineering, law, business, communication, design and education, with 24 undergraduate programs taught fully in English and others in Turkish or bilingual. A Turkish (TÖMER) preparatory year and English preparation are available, and international students in English programs are often offered free Turkish classes. The curriculum follows the Bologna/ECTS framework and is closely tied to the university’s hospitals and research centres for real-world, applied learning.

With Istanbul’s moderate student cost of living, Medipol offers strong value, especially for non-medical fields.
Graduate studies
Medipol’s five graduate institutes run 60+ master’s and 40+ doctoral programs, reflecting its ambition to be research-intensive. Master’s options span an English/Turkish MBA (thesis and non-thesis), M.Sc. in Engineering (Biomedical Engineering & Bioinformatics, Computer Engineering, AI, Electrical-Electronics & Cyber Systems, all in English), Health Sciences (Public Health, Nutrition, Physiotherapy, Nursing Science, Anatomy, Neuroscience, Clinical Psychology) and Social Sciences (LL.M. in Private/Public Law, Education, New Media & Communication). PhD programs are strongest in medicine and the health sciences (Physiology, Anatomy, Pharmacology, Public Health, Nursing) and engineering (in English), with social-science doctorates in Law, Business and Communication. Researchers tap centres such as the SABITA Health Sciences & Technologies Research Institute, biotechnology and law centres, and the Mega Hospital for clinical research, publishing internationally, presenting at conferences, and often funded through TÜBİTAK or assistantships.
Campus & facilities
Medipol is exceptionally well-resourced. Across its campuses it offers 4 major libraries (extensive print and digital collections), 140+ laboratories (medical, engineering, science and simulation), study halls, computer labs and numerous research centres, plus on-campus dormitories (separate for men and women), cafeterias, sports centres and courts, a cultural centre, and conveniences like shops and cafés. With 95+ student clubs and organisations spanning social, cultural and scientific interests, campus life is vibrant and spans all sites via university shuttles. But its standout resource is the Medipol Mega University Hospital, effectively an extension of the campus, where students train across a high volume of diverse cases (robotic surgery, advanced imaging, oncology and cardiovascular care) in a JCI-accredited environment, applying classroom learning under doctors who are often also their professors.
Student services & campus life
Medipol surrounds its huge, multicultural community with comprehensive support. An active International Office (one of Turkey’s busiest) handles admissions, visas, residence permits and orientation for 12,000+ international students from 140+ countries, with free Turkish (TÖMER) classes to aid adaptation. Student health and counseling centres (based at Kavacık North) provide medical care and psychological support, and a disability-support framework ensures accessibility. Career services leverage Medipol’s hospital network and Istanbul’s industry for internships and placements, while 95+ clubs, festivals, conferences and sports keep campus life energetic across all sites. On-campus dormitories, dining, shops and shuttle links make daily life convenient, and the genuinely global student body gives every student an international perspective.
Accreditations & recognition
Medipol holds strong national and international credentials. It earned a 5-year full institutional accreditation from Turkey’s Higher Education Quality Council (YÖKAK), and its medical program is TEPDAD-accredited (recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education), with dentistry, pharmacy, education and engineering programs accredited or pursuing accreditation (engineering via MÜDEK). Critically, the Medipol Mega University Hospital is JCI-accredited as an Academic Medical Center, a global gold standard. The university is a member of the European Law Faculties Association and the UN Academic Impact, runs Erasmus+ exchange with 100+ partner universities, and its degrees are officially recognised across the EU and the Middle East (including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq and more), so medical and other graduates can pursue licensing exams (USMLE, PLAB) and careers worldwide.
Special highlights & why choose
Medipol’s defining strength is clinically grounded, world-ranked health education. Its English-medium Medicine (International School of Medicine), Dentistry and Pharmacy train in the university’s own four-hospital, JCI-accredited Mega complex, a rare advantage that makes it a top choice for international students from across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, and is reflected in its #786 global Clinical Medicine ranking. Beyond health, its English-medium engineering (including AI and Biomedical Engineering) ties technology to healthcare; its ELFA-member Law and Business programs leverage Istanbul; and its research centres (SABITA and more) drive a genuine research culture. Add 12,000+ students from 140+ countries, broad English-medium options, stacking scholarships and discounts, Erasmus+ mobility, EU/MENA-wide recognition and modern Bosphorus-side campuses, and Istanbul Medipol University is one of Turkey’s strongest, most international and most research-driven choices, especially for aspiring doctors, dentists, pharmacists and health professionals.
