Why Istanbul Ticaret University

Istanbul Ticaret University (Istanbul Commerce University) is a prominent private foundation university in Istanbul, established in 2001 with the strong backing of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, one of the world’s largest, with some 350,000 members. In two decades it has grown from an inaugural class of 73 to nearly 10,000 students (about 1,000 international, from 80+ countries), and is renowned for its focus on business and commerce, its tight integration of academic theory with industry practice, and its strategic position at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. Its motto, “Local Identity, Global Vision”, captures its blend of local heritage and international outlook.

History & milestones

Istanbul Ticaret University was officially founded in 2001 by the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce Education and Social Services Foundation, though its roots trace back to late-Ottoman commerce-education initiatives proposed in the early 1990s. It opened with 73 students and six original faculties, then expanded into 24 undergraduate departments and numerous graduate institutes, including Turkey’s first specialised Graduate School of Foreign Trade and a pioneering Graduate School of Finance, and opened modern campuses across Istanbul (Sütlüce in 2013). Its close link with the business community keeps its curriculum aligned with industry, which has quickly boosted its reputation and produced thousands of alumni now contributing across Turkey’s economy.

Istanbul, campuses across two continents

The university operates several campuses in Istanbul, all in central, well-connected districts:

  • Sütlüce Campus (Beyoğlu), the flagship European-side campus along the Golden Horn (opened 2013), hosting Business, Law, Communication and Humanities & Social Sciences, with a moot courtroom, media studios, psychology and finance labs, a Virtual Bank Hall and the BISTLab stock-exchange simulation.
  • Küçükyalı Campus (Maltepe), the Asian-side hub for Engineering and Architecture & Design, with a 3,000 m² library and 24-hour study centre (226,000+ resources, seating ~500), specialised labs (including a defense-industry lab) and design workshops.
  • A historic Eminönü Campus on the old-city peninsula (postgraduate programs and research centres, tied to the Chamber’s headquarters region), plus a satellite presence in Bursa.

Free shuttles and Istanbul’s transit links connect the sites, giving students internships, networking and cultural experiences in Turkey’s commercial capital.

Vision & mission

The university’s vision, “Local Identity, Global Vision”, is to be a bridge between local values and global standards, producing graduates well-versed in their heritage yet competitive on the international stage. Its mission emphasises interdisciplinary studies, innovation and academic flexibility for the information age, and, true to its Chamber of Commerce roots, a deeply practice-oriented philosophy that brings the business world into the classroom through internships, industry projects and entrepreneurship. It actively promotes internationalisation and R&D for Turkey’s socioeconomic progress, fostering a global perspective via Erasmus+ partnerships with 70+ universities.

Rankings & recognition

Istanbul Ticaret holds a solid national position and growing international recognition. It ranks #61 in QS’s Western Asia region (2025) and appeared in the QS EECA band (401-450, 2022); EduRank 2025 places it around #62 in Turkey (≈3,135th globally) and URAP 2024 about #98 nationally. Notably, a 2019 analysis identified it as one of only four Turkish universities listed in all 11 major international ranking systems (including Times Higher Education), striking breadth of recognition for a specialised institution. Backed by ~3,685 academic publications and 22,600+ citations, it scores in the global top 50% across 19 research topics, from liberal arts to computer science.
