Why Istanbul Topkapi University

Istanbul Topkapi University is a private foundation university in the heart of Istanbul, known for a unique blend of arts, technology and innovation. With a multi-campus presence across the city and a multicultural environment, it hosts around 8,000 students, including nearly 2,000 internationals from 63 countries, and has produced 10,000+ graduates. Modern facilities, a wide range of programs in English and Turkish, strong industry connections and notably affordable tuition make it an appealing choice for students who want to study in Istanbul at an institution that bridges rich cultural heritage with contemporary learning.

History & milestones

The university began in 2009 as Plato College of Higher Education under the Plato Education Foundation, co-founded by the noted Turkish filmmaker Sinan Çetin, focused on practical and creative fields. It gained university status in 2016 as Istanbul Ayvansaray University, allowing it to offer bachelor’s and graduate programs, and in 2022 was renamed Istanbul Topkapi University to align with Istanbul’s historic Topkapi heritage. In just over a decade it has grown from a small vocational college into a comprehensive university with 7 faculties, eight campuses and 10,000+ graduates, while honouring its origins in art, design and media.

Istanbul, eight campuses

Topkapi University is spread across eight campuses in Istanbul, on both the European and Asian sides, each with its own character:

  • Kazlıçeşme Campus (Zeytinburnu), the central hub (~50,000 m², 25,000 m² of open space) with engineering and science labs, design studios, sports halls and two libraries; home to many undergraduate programs.
  • Balat Campus, fine arts, design and communication, amid the historic art ambiance of the Golden Horn (one of the earliest Plato-era sites).
  • Altunizade Campus (Üsküdar), the Technology & Innovation Campus for Engineering and digital media (animation, game design, MIS), with high-tech labs and studios.
  • Şişli Campus, economics, administrative and social sciences in a central commercial district.
  • Levent Campus, graduate, MBA and business programs in Istanbul’s finance district.
  • Plus Yenibosna, Bahçeşehir/Esenyurt (applied sciences and vocational training) and Gayrettepe sites.

Inter-campus shuttles and Istanbul’s transit let students experience the city’s full range, from ancient landmarks to modern startup hubs, with internships and culture always close at hand.

Vision & mission

Topkapi’s vision is to be a global centre of excellence that makes a difference in society through a fusion of art, design, science and technology, integrating contemporary global values with Turkey’s rich local heritage and cultivating appreciation for the beauty of art, depth of culture and nobility of ethics. Its mission centres on innovation in education and holistic student development, producing confident, resourceful, entrepreneurial graduates who know how to access and apply accurate information, bridging the gap between technological sciences and creative arts, and instilling strong ethical standards and cultural understanding.

Rankings & recognition

As a young university, Topkapi is steadily building its standing. EduRank 2024 places it around 136th in Turkey (≈5,372nd globally), uniRank 2023 about 167th nationally, and Webometrics 2023 around 192nd, typically in the top 150-200 of Turkey’s 200+ universities, with a clear upward trajectory. It also participates in the THE Impact Rankings, listed for contributions to UN Sustainable Development Goals such as Quality Education and Gender Equality. While not yet among Turkey’s elite institutions, its rapid development in educational quality and research signals a rising reputation.

Academics & language of instruction

Topkapi offers a rich selection, dozens of undergraduate majors, around 36 master’s, 2 doctoral and 56 associate programs across 7 faculties, a graduate school and the Plato Vocational School. Many programs are taught in English (Computer Engineering, Business Administration, International Trade & Business, Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology and more), with Turkish tracks and an English or Turkish (TÖMER) preparatory year available. The curriculum follows the Bologna/ECTS framework, supports double majors and minors, and is distinguished by its interdisciplinary approach connecting design, technology, business and the social sciences, with industry-aligned, practical content throughout.

Tuition & scholarships

Topkapi is among the more affordable private universities in Istanbul; fees are quoted in US dollars, and the figures below are approximate annual guidance, exact current fees appear in the tuition table above:

  • Associate (2-year) programs: roughly $1,450-2,000 / year
  • Bachelor’s programs: about $1,750-3,250 / year (social-science/Turkish-medium fields nearer the lower end; English-medium and engineering such as Computer Engineering nearer the top)
  • Master’s programs: about $2,250-3,250 / year for most tracks, with some English/specialised programs higher (up to ~$8,500)
  • PhD programs: about $5,000 / year

Many quoted figures are already net of discounts: the university offers merit and international scholarships, a ~5% sibling discount, and accepts government Türkiye Scholarships, while graduate and PhD students may receive assistantships or tuition waivers. Combined with Istanbul’s relatively low student cost of living, Topkapi delivers strong value.

Graduate studies

Topkapi’s graduate school runs around 36 master’s programs (thesis and non-thesis) and 2 PhD programs, with classes often scheduled evenings and weekends for working students. Flagship master’s include the MBA, Engineering & Design and AI & Data Science, plus Marketing Communications, Security Science & Applications, Information Management Systems, Psychology, History and Culinary Arts. PhD programs are offered in Architectural Engineering and Information Management Systems, research-intensive, blending design, engineering and IT-management. Graduate students engage the university’s research centres (e.g. the Migration Policy Research Center and Distance Learning Research Center), can work as research/teaching assistants with stipends or waivers, and are encouraged to publish and present, with the doctoral offering expected to grow as research capacity expands.

Campus & facilities

Across its eight campuses Topkapi offers 34 laboratories, design studios, ateliers and workshops, two main libraries with extensive digital and print collections and extended exam-period hours, sports halls and fitness facilities, cafeterias, courtyards and green spaces, all with high-speed Wi-Fi, smart classrooms and an online LMS. Specialised facilities match each campus: high-tech computer labs and digital production studios at Altunizade, creative studios at Balat and Bahçeşehir (fashion, animation, aviation and automotive tech), and engineering and science labs at Kazlıçeşme. Its emphasis on practical skills and internships, supported by a Career Development Center and strong industry links, helps students gain real experience before they graduate.

Student services & campus life

Topkapi backs its diverse community with comprehensive support. While it has no university-owned dormitories, it partners with private dorms and student residences near campus (with dedicated female-student dorms and help finding housing for others). Health services (campus clinic plus referrals to Istanbul’s many hospitals) and free, confidential counseling support well-being, with accessibility accommodations for students with disabilities. A Career Development Center runs CV and interview workshops, career days, and an internship/job portal backed by strong company ties, many students intern at firms, studios, hospitals and media outlets, and some receive pre-graduation offers. An active International Office assists 1,964 international students from 63 countries with admissions, visas, residence permits, orientation and cultural events, plus Turkish-language support. With 30+ student clubs, sports teams, festivals, exhibitions and national-association groups, campus life is creative, lively and genuinely multicultural.

Accreditations & recognition

Topkapi is fully accredited by Turkey’s YÖK and established by official Cabinet Decision, with degrees recognised nationally and following the Bologna/ECTS framework. It participates in Erasmus+ exchange (partner universities across Europe) as well as Turkey’s Farabi (domestic) and Mevlana (global) exchange programs, and the THE Impact Rankings. Its diplomas are recognised across several EU countries and the Middle East and North Africa, including Egypt, Libya, Yemen and Sudan, so international graduates can have their degrees validated at home, and it is building toward international programmatic accreditation (e.g. ABET/AACSB-aligned standards) as it grows.

Special highlights & why choose

Topkapi’s signature is its creative DNA fused with technology, born from a film-and-design college, it remains a standout for arts, design and media (Graphic Design, Cartoon & Animation, Digital Game Design and a hands-on Radio-TV-Cinema program with a filmmaking heritage) while now delivering English-medium engineering and AI & Data Science at a dedicated Technology & Innovation Campus. Distinctive strengths include a rare Aviation Management program tied to Istanbul’s aviation hub, a strong Nursing and health-sciences faculty with hospital training, a full Sports Sciences faculty, and emerging master’s in security science and culinary arts. Add a network of eight campuses spanning historic Balat to business-district Levent, English and Turkish options, 2,000 international students from 63 countries, exceptionally affordable tuition, scholarships, and Erasmus+/Farabi/Mevlana mobility, and Istanbul Topkapi University is a distinctive, accessible and welcoming choice for a modern, interdisciplinary education in the heart of Istanbul.
