Why Istinye University
Istinye University (ISU) is one of the rising stars of Turkish higher education, known for its innovative approach and strong industry connections. Established in 2015 in Istanbul, it is backed by the 21st Century Anatolian Foundation and the renowned MLP Care hospital group, operators of Liv Hospital and Medical Park, giving it a powerful foundation in medical education and research. With 14,000+ students (including ~2,500 internationals) across 9 faculties, English-language programs, modern campuses, 19 research centres, a clear focus on AI and technology, and exceptional international reach (#1 in Turkey for International Outlook, THE), ISU is an ideal choice for students who want a globally recognised education in Turkey.
History & milestones
Founded in 2015 by the 21st Century Anatolian Foundation, ISU draws on nearly three decades of experience from the MLP Care Group (Liv Hospital, Medical Park). It opened in 2016, launching faculties in Medicine, Health Sciences and related fields, then expanded rapidly into engineering, arts and social sciences. In less than a decade it has grown to 14,000+ students, opened a second modern campus (Vadi), built 19 research centres, joined international research collaborations (including CERN’s ATLAS experiment), and risen into global rankings, winning Turkey’s Service Exporters’ Association award (4th in Educational Services, 2021 and 2022) and earning #1 in Turkey for International Outlook from Times Higher Education.
Istanbul, two campuses and top hospitals
ISU operates two main campuses on Istanbul’s European side:
- Topkapı Campus (Zeytinburnu), the central main campus with 30+ classrooms, nearly 50 high-tech labs (including medical-simulation suites), a comprehensive library, gym and conference halls, hosting Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Health Sciences, Arts & Sciences, Economics & Social Sciences, Fine Arts/Design/Architecture and Communication.
- Vadi Campus (Sarıyer), a cutting-edge campus near the Vadi Istanbul district for Engineering & Natural Sciences and the School of Foreign Languages, with engineering workshops, innovation labs and a startup incubation centre.
For clinical training, ISU uses two premium affiliated training hospitals, İstinye University Hospital Medical Park (Gaziosmanpaşa) and İstinye University Liv Hospital (Bahçeşehir), among Istanbul’s top facilities, with simulation centres, operating theatres and centres of excellence (organ transplant, oncology) for invaluable hands-on experience.
Vision & mission
ISU’s mission is to offer innovative, sustainable, student-centred education and conduct cutting-edge research that uses advanced technology to solve local and global problems, in close collaboration with industry and the community so education translates into real-world impact. Its vision is to be a leading world university, particularly distinguished in artificial intelligence and technology development, and recognised internationally for excellence in education, research and innovation. Its core values emphasise knowledge, creativity, ethical leadership and social responsibility.
Rankings & recognition
Though young, ISU has risen quickly in the global tables. Times Higher Education 2025 places it in the 1001-1200 band worldwide and 13th in Turkey overall, and ranks it #1 in Turkey for International Outlook, reflecting its diverse community and global ties. U.S. News Best Global Universities 2025 ranks it #1463 globally and #30 in Turkey, and QS Europe (Western Asia) 2025 places it 61st in Western Asia (601+ in Europe). It is also recognised among Turkey’s top foundation universities for research and innovation, and its trajectory, backed by 19 research centres and international collaborations, points to continued climbs.
Academics & language of instruction
ISU offers a comprehensive portfolio, around 60 bachelor’s, 44 associate, 38 master’s and 15 PhD programs across 9 faculties, two vocational schools and a graduate school. The medium of instruction is English and Turkish, with many programs taught fully in English (Medicine, Pharmacy, several engineering and business fields) to serve its large international community, plus a School of Foreign Languages for English (or Turkish/TÖMER) preparation. The curriculum follows the Bologna/ECTS framework, embeds internships and industry projects, and weaves research, through its AI, biotechnology and health centres, throughout, with interdisciplinary collaboration encouraged across faculties.
Faculties & specializations
- Faculty of Medicine, a 6-year MD with clinical training across the Liv Hospital and Medical Park network.
- Faculty of Dentistry, a 5-year DDS with advanced clinics (orthodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics); Faculty of Pharmacy, a 5-year program with pharmaceutical labs.
- Faculty of Engineering & Natural Sciences, Computer, Software, Mechanical, Electrical-Electronics and Industrial Engineering, Mathematics/Physics/Chemistry, and a forward-looking Artificial Intelligence Engineering program.

Tuition & scholarships
ISU’s tuition is the same for Turkish and international students; fees are quoted in US dollars, and the figures below are approximate annual guidance, exact current fees appear in the tuition table above:
- Associate (2-year) programs: about $5,000 / year
- Bachelor’s (most fields): about $8,000 / year (engineering, business, arts & sciences); some media/finance fields nearer $5,000-6,000
- Professional health programs: Pharmacy ~$15,000, Dentistry ~$24,500, Medicine ~$29,000 / year
- Master’s programs: about $8,000-15,000 depending on track (commonly ~$8,500/year)
- PhD programs: about $12,500 / year
A 5% sibling discount, early-payment and merit scholarships help with cost, and government Türkiye Scholarships are accepted; international students pay the same rates as locals. An English Preparatory Year ($8,000) or Turkish prep ($3,000) is available, and PhD/research students may receive assistantships or tuition waivers, strong value given the premium hospital training and Istanbul’s moderate cost of living.
Graduate studies
ISU’s graduate school runs about 38 master’s and 15 PhD programs across social sciences, natural sciences, engineering and health, in thesis (research) and non-thesis (professional) tracks, many in English. Flagship master’s include the MBA, Cyber Security, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence Engineering, Computer Engineering, Political Science & IR, Physiotherapy, Molecular Biology & Genetics, Architectural Design and Cinema & Television. PhD programs focus on the sciences and engineering, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Chemistry, Physics and related specialisations, with research in cutting-edge areas (nanomedicine, AI applications, advanced materials). Graduate students access the university’s 19 research centres, internal grants, a Technology Transfer Office for patents, and global collaborations such as CERN’s ATLAS, and often serve as research/teaching assistants with stipends or waivers.
Campus & facilities
ISU’s campuses are modern and well-resourced: 50+ laboratories and simulation centres, a library with extensive databases and collaborative study spaces, smart classrooms with multimedia systems, an innovation and incubation centre (Vadi), fitness and recreation facilities, conference halls and cafeterias, all linked by a robust digital learning platform and campus-wide high-speed internet. Its 19 research centres (AI, biotechnology, robotics, health and social research) give even undergraduates a chance to engage in real projects, while the affiliated Liv Hospital and Medical Park facilities, with operating theatres, simulation centres and centres of excellence, serve as extended clinical campuses that anchor ISU’s strength in the health sciences. Campuses are secure (24/7) and accessible, with a Disability Support Unit.
Student services & campus life
ISU surrounds students with comprehensive support. While university dormitories are under construction, the International Office secures discounted places in partner private dorms and helps with housing, roommates and neighbourhoods. Orientation programs ease arrival (registration, residence permits, culture), a free, confidential Psychological Counseling Unit (plus a harassment-support unit) looks after well-being, and academic advising, library research help, tutoring and free Turkish (TÖMER) classes aid success. A Career Center runs fairs, CV/interview workshops and internship placement, many students intern at Medical Park hospitals, tech firms, banks and media partners. With 50+ student clubs, an International Day, sports teams and tournaments, fitness centres, campus health services and discounted student transit, student life is vibrant, safe and genuinely multicultural (students from 50+ countries).
Accreditations & recognition
ISU is fully accredited by Turkey’s YÖK, with its professional programs (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy) recognised by the relevant ministries and councils so graduates can practise or continue studies. It is a member of the European University Association (EUA) and the Balkan Universities Association, follows the Bologna/ECTS framework, and runs Erasmus+ exchange plus bilateral partnerships with universities in the US, South Korea, Iran, Azerbaijan, Italy, Poland, Spain and more. Its research credibility is underscored by participation in CERN’s ATLAS experiment, and its appeal to international students earned Turkey’s Service Exporters’ Association award (4th in Educational Services, 2021-2022). Its standing in THE, U.S. News and QS rankings further confirms that an ISU degree meets international benchmarks.
