Why TED University

TED University (TEDU) is a private, non-profit university in Ankara, Turkey’s capital, offering an innovative, fully English-medium education built on a liberal-arts approach. Established in 2009 by the Turkish Education Association (TED), an organisation with over 90 years of heritage in advancing education in Turkey, TEDU has quickly earned a strong reputation for academic excellence and student-centred learning, with about 4,800 students, ~400 faculty (many holding doctorates from Europe and North America), small classes and #1-in-Turkey scores for academic support. It attracts students from Africa, Asia, the Middle East and beyond who want quality, English-taught programs at affordable tuition, in a safe and well-organised capital city.

History & milestones

TED University was founded on 7 July 2009 under the umbrella of the Turkish Education Association, welcoming its first students in 2012. Starting with just 320 students and a handful of programs, it has grown steadily into a university with five faculties and a graduate school, around 4,800 students and ~400 faculty. From the outset it set itself apart by adopting a liberal-arts education model, only the second university in Turkey to do so, giving students a broad foundation and encouraging interdisciplinary thinking. A major milestone came in 2021, when TEDU became one of the first private universities in Turkey to earn full institutional accreditation (a 5-year award) from the national Higher Education Quality Council (YÖKAK), a testament to its rapid rise in quality standards.

Ankara, a central, urban campus

TEDU is located in Ankara, the heart of Turkey. Its Kolej Campus sits in downtown Ankara, a lively district known for educational institutions, with a metro station nearby and proximity to government offices, companies, international organisations and cultural venues. The urban campus blends historic charm with modern facilities: smart classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, creative design studios, a large library, computer labs, dormitories, cafeterias, student lounges, a fitness centre and even an indoor swimming pool, all within a few city blocks. Ankara is a safe, organised and affordable student city, letting international students immerse in Turkish culture, secure internships at capital-based organisations, and enjoy museums, parks and a rich social scene while studying.

Vision & mission

TEDU’s vision is to leave a lasting impact on society for a sustainable future. Its mission is to nurture creative, critical-minded, socially responsible individuals through an education centred on active learning and real-world engagement, prioritising small classes, interdisciplinary projects and a global outlook, and encouraging students to think independently, communicate effectively and apply their knowledge to solve real problems. Its core values, excellence, innovation, inclusivity and integrity, shape an approach designed to graduate “future-ready” individuals who are not only well-versed in their fields but equipped to be innovators and leaders in any career or community.

Rankings & recognition

Though young, TEDU is making a clear mark, especially in teaching quality and student experience. URAP 2024 ranks it around 138th in Turkey, and the THE Impact Rankings 2024 place it in the 601-800 band globally and among the top 10 in Turkey for Quality Education (SDG4), underscoring its teaching and social-impact strengths. Webometrics 2024 positions it around 3,695th worldwide as its research visibility grows. Most tellingly, in nationwide student surveys TEDU consistently ranks at or near the very top, rated #1 in Turkey for academic support to students in 2024 and among the leaders for overall satisfaction, evidence that its student-centred model delivers.

Academics & language of instruction

TEDU offers 21 bachelor’s programs plus a range of master’s and PhD programs across five faculties and a graduate school, all taught in English (with an English Preparatory Year available). Its defining liberal-arts model gives students a broad, flexible foundation alongside their major: they can take electives outside their field, pursue minors or even double majors, and engage in interdisciplinary projects. Learning is hands-on, labs and capstones for engineering and science, studios and portfolios for architecture and design, case studies and internships for business, and teaching practicums for education. The curriculum follows the Bologna/ECTS framework, with small classes and close faculty mentorship throughout.

Faculties & specializations

  • Faculty of Engineering, Computer, Electrical-Electronics, Mechanical, Civil, Industrial and Software Engineering, with project-based learning (robotics, software, renewable energy) and award-winning competition teams.
  • Faculty of Architecture & Design, Architecture, Interior Architecture & Environmental Design, Industrial Design and Visual Communication Design, with a strong studio culture and nationally accredited programs.
  • Faculty of Economics & Administrative Sciences, Business Administration, Economics and Political Science & International Relations, with case studies, an entrepreneurship club/incubator and a global outlook.
  • Faculty of Arts & Sciences, Psychology, English Language & Literature, Mathematics and Sociology, anchoring TEDU’s liberal-arts foundation.
  • Faculty of Education, Early Childhood, Primary (Mathematics) Teaching, English Language Education and Guidance & Psychological Counseling, drawing on TED’s 90-year educational heritage.

Tuition & scholarships

TEDU’s tuition is affordable for a fully English-medium university; fees are quoted in US dollars and include taxes; the figures below are approximate annual guidance, exact current fees appear in the tuition table above:

  • Bachelor’s (most programs): about $5,900 / year (engineering, architecture, business, sciences)
  • Education and some arts programs: roughly $1,875-4,000 / year (lower, helped by institutional scholarships)
  • Master’s programs: about $6,000-8,000 for the full program (Clinical Psychology higher, ~$11,000)
  • PhD programs: often covered by tuition waivers and stipends via research/teaching assistantships

The university offers generous merit scholarships of 25-100%, plus international-student and sibling discounts, and accepts government Türkiye Scholarships, so many international students attend with substantial aid, making the effective cost very low. An optional English prep year (if required) costs the same as one academic year. Combined with Ankara’s low cost of living, TEDU delivers strong value for an internationally credible, English-taught degree.

Graduate studies

TEDU’s Graduate School offers master’s (thesis and non-thesis, typically 1.5-2 years) and PhD (≈4 years) programs in fields aligned with its faculties: Mechanical, Civil and Computer Engineering, Engineering Management, Applied Data Science, Architecture & Urban Studies, Economics & Finance, Educational Management & Instruction, Psychological Counseling and Clinical Psychology, with doctorates in Architecture, Civil and Computer Engineering, English Language Education and Clinical Psychology. Graduate study is defined by close mentorship and ample research, small classes and seminars mean working directly with professors, and many students publish papers or present at conferences while studying. PhD candidates commonly receive tuition waivers and stipends through assistantships, conduct original research and help teach undergraduates, gaining an internationally credible qualification for academia or high-level industry roles.

Campus & facilities

The Kolej Campus packs comprehensive facilities into a central setting: a spacious library with extensive print and digital resources, quiet and group study areas and online databases; computer labs with specialised engineering, design and computing software; modern design studios and well-equipped laboratories; an indoor swimming pool and fitness centre with an indoor sports court; on-campus dormitories (single or shared, with study spaces, lounges, laundry and security); affordable cafeterias and cafés; and a health clinic plus a Psychological Counseling Center. Campus-wide high-speed Wi-Fi, a metro station nearby and abundant surrounding cafes and eateries make daily life convenient, a true one-stop environment in the heart of the capital.

Student services & campus life

TEDU offers a supportive, close-knit student experience. Comfortable on-campus dormitories and dining ease the transition for international students, a health clinic and a Psychological Counseling Center look after well-being, and strong academic advising and tutoring ensure no one gets lost in the crowd. A dedicated Career Center provides coaching, CV and interview workshops, networking events and job fairs, so many students secure internships or offers before graduating, while the International Office handles orientation, visas and Erasmus+ study-abroad. With dozens of student clubs (academic, cultural, artistic and athletic), an annual Spring Fest and international culture days, plus sports facilities including the pool and gym, campus life is vibrant and genuinely multicultural, students from dozens of countries learning together in central Ankara.

Accreditations & recognition

TEDU is fully accredited by Turkey’s YÖK and was among the first private universities in Turkey to earn full institutional accreditation (2021) from the Higher Education Quality Council (YÖKAK), a 5-year award reflecting its quality across teaching, research and governance. Its engineering programs hold MÜDEK accreditation and its architecture/industrial design programs are nationally accredited (MİAK), so graduates can pursue professional recognition with confidence. It follows the Bologna/ECTS framework (with English Diploma Supplements) and is an active member of the Erasmus+ exchange network, sending students on European semesters and welcoming exchange students, so a TEDU degree is internationally benchmarked and easily transferable for work or further study abroad.

Special highlights & why choose

TEDU’s signature is a fully English-medium, liberal-arts education with a rare student-centred quality, small classes, faculty trained at top European and North American universities, and #1-in-Turkey academic-support ratings, backed by the 90-year heritage of the Turkish Education Association. It is one of only two liberal-arts universities in Turkey and among the first to earn full institutional accreditation (2021). Its MÜDEK-accredited engineering (with award-winning project teams), nationally accredited architecture and design studio culture, and entrepreneurship-focused business programs stand out, all enriched by interdisciplinary minors and double majors. Add generous scholarships (25-100%), Erasmus+ mobility, a complete central-Ankara campus (with pool, studios and a large library), top student-satisfaction scores and the affordability of the capital, and TED University is a high-quality, internationally minded and genuinely student-focused choice for studying in Turkey.
