Why Üsküdar University
Üsküdar University is a prominent private foundation university in Istanbul, known for specialised education and research in behavioral health, psychology and the health sciences. Established in 2011, it is often called Turkey’s first thematic university focused on behavioral health and sciences, reflecting its unique origin in partnership with a leading neuropsychiatry group. With modern campuses on Istanbul’s Asian side, a UNESCO Center of Excellence in brain research, and a commitment to interdisciplinary learning, backed by affiliated hospitals, 80+ labs and ~1,000 academics, it now hosts over 24,000 students (including 3,500+ internationals from ~100 countries), making it an attractive destination for students seeking a research-driven education in Turkey.
History & milestones
Üsküdar University was officially established on 3 March 2011 under the leadership of Prof. Nevzat Tarhan and the Human Values and Mental Health Foundation, a pioneer in Turkish neuropsychiatry that operates the NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital and introduced firsts like Turkey’s first Memory Center (1999) and TMS treatment. It welcomed its first students in 2012, graduating its first class in 2014. The university launched specialised graduate schools from its first year, and in 2014 founded the Institute for Sufi Studies, the first of its kind in Turkey. Its emphasis on neuroscience earned it a UNESCO Center of Excellence recognition in neurobiology and brain research in 2018, the same era it established its Faculty of Medicine, and it has since added Dentistry and broadened engineering, communication and social-science programs, continually expanding its scope and infrastructure.
Istanbul, multiple Asian-side campuses
Üsküdar University is based in Istanbul, with all campuses on the Asian side, primarily in the historic Üsküdar district along the Bosphorus. The main campus in Altunizade is a well-connected, central hub (a short walk from the Çekmeköy metro) housing Engineering & Natural Sciences, administration and the İbrahim Tarhan Library; the Çarşı Campus in Mimar Sinan hosts Health Sciences and graduate institutes near the Üsküdar waterfront; the South Campus houses Humanities/Social Sciences and Communication (with TV/radio studios and a media centre); and dedicated campuses in Ümraniye host the Faculty of Medicine (next to the NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital) and the Faculty of Dentistry (with its own dental hospital). Inter-campus shuttles and excellent transport links let students cross-register and enjoy Istanbul’s blend of history, Bosphorus views and modern opportunity.
Vision & mission
Üsküdar University’s mission centres on socio-economic and cultural development, providing international-level education and research facilities in science, health and cultural heritage, being a pioneering, model university that drives regional development, and using resources to solve humanity’s pressing problems (with a notable focus on health). Its vision is to be a “leading, ideal, universal university” working with holistic, interdisciplinary methods, uniting mind-body health, medicine, genetics, engineering and the social and spiritual sciences toward common goals. A core part of that vision is to “protect and improve the mental health of the community” through a holistic approach spanning history, culture, society and health, reflecting its origins in behavioral health and human values, and its commitment to EU and global education standards.
Rankings & recognition
Üsküdar is climbing within Turkey’s top tier, especially in its specialised fields. EduRank 2025 ranks it around 63rd in Turkey (≈3,338th globally) and Webometrics 2023 about 85th nationally (≈2,892nd worldwide), placing it within the top ~70 of Turkey’s 200+ universities. Most distinctively, UNESCO named it a Center of Excellence in neurobiology and brain research, and UNESCO-TWAS selected it as a host institution for international doctoral research, the only Turkish university so recognised in neuroscience.
