How to Choose the Right University and Major

With thousands of programs across dozens of universities, “where should I study?” can feel paralysing. Here’s a framework we use with students every week to cut through the noise.

Start with the major, not the university

It’s tempting to chase a famous name, but the program is what you’ll live with for four years and what shapes your career. Ask yourself:

• What subjects did I genuinely enjoy at school?
• What kind of work do I want to be doing in five years?
• Do I want a practical, hands-on field or a research-heavy one?

If you’re unsure, that’s normal, a good advisor helps you narrow it down.

Then weigh the university on four things

1. Accreditation & recognition, make sure the degree is recognised in your home country, especially for medicine, dentistry, and engineering.
2. Language of instruction, be honest about your English (or Turkish) level. The right language makes or breaks your first year.
3. City, Istanbul is vibrant but pricier; Ankara, Izmir, and Bursa offer a calmer, cheaper student life.
4. Total cost, tuition plus living costs, not just the headline fee.

Don’t pick a city for the nightlife and a university for the ranking. Pick the combination that fits the life you actually want to live.

Make a shortlist, then compare
